Any explanations? Or is it just flavor text? I've also had slaves before too

New visitor type since 44.01. Come to visit your temple.
You'll find prophets, monks, criminals and peddlars too.

Might also appear in migrant wave due to bug (ex-spy retaining fake name and profession - they use visitor types as cover when spying).

Seems like that's what you have here. You'd have to check Legends to be sure. If he's married, his spouse might mention his true name in her thoughts page (with the fake name in her relationships list).

Just treat him like any other dorf. Often they come with good combat skills.

Slave migrants would be odd, given that dwarves don't accept slavery, although it might be a cover, as mentioned. I've had a slave visitor (prior to 0.44.01) who behaved just like any other visitor to the tavern.

Seems to be a regular (non-dwarf) visitor type. Probably just as likely to appear in a migrant wave due to the bug. Don't suppose dwarven ethics prevents them from impersonating slaves.

Although slave as "visitor-type" probably isn't working as intended to begin with.  :)

Slave visitors depends very much on the slave status. A cotton farm slave type visitor would be very unlikely (although I believe even in that setting, some slaves were sent on errands, but would rarely be given "free time"), while an ancient Greek or Roman artisan slave could have quite a bit of freedom.
I suspect "slave" is a social status override akin to the "<X> consort" one.

I thought pilgrims and the like were still a placeholder used by spies.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Pilgrims are a new visitor type. They don't do much right now. I believe they're attracted by temples. Various types were added recently to ensure high mobility for spies who pose as them (not all pilgrims are spies).

Visitor types shouldn't be arriving in migrant groups though (as is happening in the op's case). This is caused when a dwarf from your civ is spying and has taken on the guise of a pilgrim/peddler whatever and then gets selected by the game to migrate to your fortress. They retain their fake name and visitor-type occupation even though they don't need it any more.

Should I be worried? Is there any harm in letting them in? Or do I need to send him on a pilgrimage to the Dark Tower?

I think there's no harm anyway. They were once spy( for your civ), but now decide to settle in your fort.

How large is the world and how long is the history if one gets visitor? I went from pocket to smaller and then to small, from 30 years to 100 years, and I didn't get any visitors.

I started this fort in vanilla 44.10 with a medium island map, resources at 100, and 550 years of history.

I also edited the layer depth of stone, but that wouldnt affect visitors I think.

I also think once you pierce the cavern, visitors begin showing up in earnest.

He was once a spy for your civ. He's a hero, not an enemy, don't be afraid of him. Chances are he has decent combat skills, or at least some decent persuasion ability.
