(A quick thing to flex my writing muscles. It'll go where and as far as it will go...)

For as long as you can remember, you've lived here in this garden, under the protection and tutelage of your master. His metal face is the only you have ever known, aside from the stone ones of the small statues amidst the greenery, and your own face reflected in the water, which looks like...

...a serpent with the feathers of a fowl, or at least that's what your master says it looks like. You're not sure what either of those things are, though you wonder as you taste the garden's air with your tongue.

Your master tells you his metal body needs no food, though he teaches you of the things in his garden for you to eat, and how to tend them. One day, as you check the progress of a butterfly's chrysalis, you notice your master walking through his plants more slowly than usual. The next day, he moves even slower. The day after, you notice grinding noises as he moves. One day, he takes you aside, grasping your hand. "Do you remember the tender bean plants of last year? Or the butterflies who gave birth to the ones you watch now?"

"Not very well, though I know that I saw them once. Were they not very much like the ones now?

He sits down on the stone bench, regarding you with his kindly lights. "They were much like the ones here now will be when they emerge from their cocoons. But... do you know where they have gone? Or the spring grubs that we have cooked?"

"The grubs went into my belly! I guess that means they are me, now? And the others fell onto the soil and... got eaten by other things, maybe? I've never watched to see what happens. Maybe I should!"

"That is, in one sense, quite true. I am proud to see you understand this flow of the garden so well. I need you to understand, too, that in another sense, they are gone." With a scraping sound, he takes your other hand. "Do you understand?"
