Question about Knowledge/Topics
« on: May 01, 2018, 07:14:44 pm »

On the wiki, it discusses Tech or Advancements here:  http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Topic

How do I actually see what my civilization has researched?  Is that possible?

You can always take a look at the non-fiction texts published by members of your civ in legends mode. That should give you some idea.

If you mean once you've actually started a fort, then it gets a bit more difficult unless you want to use one of the in-fort legends mods or go out on a limb raiding books from other settlements of your own civ (which I'm not even 100% sure is possible).

How can I tell which books my dwarves have written?

The description of the book should say who wrote it. Look up the dwarf who wrote the book and see whether they're from your civ or not (it will say under "Related Entities" which civ they're from).

If you're using DFHack you could use The Librarian script http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=170462.0. I wrote the script to allow you to find that kind of info in a somewhat organized fashion.

If you're using vanilla you'd probably use the stocks screen to look at every codex/book and every written scroll/quire and make notes on a pad of paper as you go (or an electronic equivalent to paper). Note that written works are split between two categories, where scrolls/quires are in to tools one.

Is that script included in the LNP or will I need to add it?  Thanks for making it!

It's not included in the LNP (none of my scripts are), so you need to go to the github web page linked to in the Utilities page above. That page has the script on it. I hope the script's Utilities page is sufficient to tell you how to proceed from there. If not, post a note in that thread explaining what is confusing, and I'll try to improve the description to cover that.

I was confused on how to download it. The key is clicking Raw. Then you can right click to Save Page As, and save to /hack/scripts.

Hm, didn't know that! I'd just copy/paste the page section containing the script, but using the raw/save as is easier.

I don't have one as a matter of personal choice. I don't mind others doing as they please.

Not accusing, just wanted to point out something I found interesting

I didn't take it as an accusation, just stated my position and clarified that it wasn't an accusation, as it might otherwise be mistaken as such.

I still have a question about our knowlegde system: Is it planned, that eventually we unlock technology ingame by researching these topics, similar to a tech tree?

If so, that would be amazing for long time forts dedicated to the preservation and advancement of knowlege, similarly to how Monasteries operated in the early middle ages.
You could even start with a modded civilization, bear men for instance, and see them progress from semi savages to one of the most advanced civilizations on the world.

This would make the ongoing world more interesting too: Dwarves may start with the knowlege to make steel, but what if humans can catch up? Depending on the nature of the tech system, you (new civilization) may start by unlocking knowlege throug building a library, which unlocks the other scholars, which lets your civilization unlock all the technologies eventually.

The knowledge system is intended to be integrated into DF eventually, yes, but the nearest term development in that direction is probably a Myth & Magic arc (although not necessarily the first one) where magic research would enable more magic.
One possibility for mundane knowledge to get an application is with multi tile machinery, but we'll have to wait quite some time for that to see what actually comes out.
It's also quite possible some civs might be blocked from some research branches via ethics or myth, and it might be possible for blocks to apply to races as well (ethics are going to be possible to modify eventually...).
