Indoor or housing is both Livable, so frostbitten folks could do the research and it'd be just as good as resting(In theory). If we get the gathering inventory we'd know how much we've got left and can plan ahead a bit better.

Note that we can dismantle the steam turbine at any point to get 4 steel and a steam core. And unless we plan on building a motorised vehicle at some point, I don't think we'll ever need it, so doing so is fairly safe.

I'd like to start down the Heating tech path ASAP, cos whilst the first item isn't super useful, I assume later items will involve upgrading our Generator, which we def want to do.

We don't really need to know the limit of our gatherable resources right now, being able to build a hothouse would be more valuable so we can stockpile a lot of food for expeditions when the weather clears up. We definitely should try to make as many expeditions to the supply ship as possible, before it breaks down.

This is true; heck, it's even a Free Action! I'd still only recommend doing so if it is necessary though; we don't exactly have the capabilities to create another and it may be useful later.

Don't hesitate if that steel/steam core is needed in the now, of course. Given how we have a very healthy stockpile of Steam Cores and our need for steel isn't overwhelming at the moment; I do not believe it to be necessary at this time.

The turbine be useful only if we can make a really large locomotive or a ship. Heck, it probably is too big for anything save the most ridiculously unrealistic locomotives.

Though living on a perpetually-moving self-sustaining icebreaker WOULD be pretty neat...

The conundrum is this: as I understand it, for some inscrutable reason, permanent resources don't add that amount each turn, they refill our stockpile to that amount each turn- and if we already have that amount or more, they do nothing. Which basically means we have to end every turn with 0 wood and 0 steel, or we're losing out.
So whilst we could do better things by dismantling the turbine, we'd end up with 1 steel in reserve, which would be bad.

@ebbor I haven't misunderstood how the resource system works, right?

for some inscrutable reason

The problem with infinite storage and accumulation of resources is that it makes it way too easy to accumulate large reserves of resources.

Your understanding is correct.

Fair enough. I mean, I disagree that that's a problem- the amount of resources we get is the same, we just need to do things in a slightly convoluted manner- but it's your game.

Anyway, I'd like to avoid more frostbitten folks if possible, so I think we should do the medicine posts instead of the coal thumper. The already frostbitten folks can figure out the hothouse.

I'd point out that this system is not a new one and it exists in other games (that are good), like mana in Magic the Gathering, or action points in XCOM, where your resources are replenished at the start of a turn and the core gameplay revolves around using your resources as efficiently as possible.

As for believability: to me, it's easy to accept that if we don't have space to store a resource that we wouldn't be able to produce more of it.

If we could infinitely stockpile resources then we'll accumulate large amounts of resources we don't need to spend often, which defeats the whole point of making a rare resource, and makes it harder for ebbor to control what we have.

Flamfjord, 1878, Week 4

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Surlington's Logbook

Midday Observation : The snow has ceased. Temperatures remain stable around 30 degrees. The situation in the Fjord has not improved, ice rendering it non-navigable.

Expedition notes :

We fired up the blast furnace yesterday, producing desperately needed metals for our reserves. The furnaces are hungry however, and between the generator and steel production, we're eating into our reserves as frightening pace. If we can't acquire more supplies soon, we will be forced to shut down the generator and endure the cold.

You haven't updated the Steelworks action, FYI.

Anyway, obviously we set up the coal thumper this turn. With the snow clearing up, we should probably send out an expedition. I'd also like to work on heating research.

Set up Coal Thumper (-2w, -1s)

Innovate -  Heating : Hubs and Heaters (-2s)

Send an expedition into the Frostland - The Outpost(Survivors) (-1f)
