Largest/Longest world gen in 44.x?
« on: April 22, 2018, 09:37:57 am »

After downloading the latest versions i have noticed i am now unable to generate medium regions, and even islands, with 300 years of history.
The world generation becomes unresponsive and windows automatically throws the popup to shoot it down.

This is a pretty sad state of affairs, considering that procedural generation of not just worlds but of beings, sites, civs, beasts and wars is the strong suit of dwarf fortress i always found most interesting.

So... what do i need to actually generate a proper 1k+ year large world in this latest version?
Is it even possible?

I've tracked the process, and it never used more than 1 core, which means there is very little room for improvement from my old 3570k running at 4.4Ghz.

DF does not multithread.

You sure it's not just your PC? I've never had this problem with any 44. release.

I generate medium regions of 450 years, with massively increased hist-figs for extra slow generation goodness. No problems at all. A 1000 year old world might see me leave my PC overnight (and there's a crash that might happen, fixed in next release apparently so I don't bother with that right now). But yeah, 450 no issues. Half an hour or so? Maybe less.

I've been getting some crashes on worldgen. Size/history doesn't seem to matter as much as excessive events. When a mapgen appears to be generating more events per year it seems to crash more. Could just be my imagination though. First time using 44.09 I generated a 1050 year history on a large world with no problem though, so it is possible.

The shutdown popup doesn't mean anything. DF is still running when it comes up, it just takes it a little longer to respond. It generally takes me many hours to generate a world with 1050 years of history, but it can be done.
