Simply so it is easier to understand where you are. It would still be easy to see birds but just blue doesn’t seem as logical when the ground is only a few yards below me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last graphics update should have enabled custom tilesets to do this. My LNP phoebix(?) tileset seems to show many z-levels down, though maybe I am misremembering it as I don't get to play so often these days.

If your question is why this isn't the default behaviour, it's because Toady is too busy to bother with silly nonsense like graphics.

TWBT requires DFHack. (Personally, I had issues with the multilevel feature causing random crashes.)
