My suggestion, like some others, is to have pipes buildable.

These would be treated as an empty space, but it acts like everything else is surrounded by walls. Animals can path through these appropriately, and can climb up them if able.

These movement restrictions would apply to fluids as well. If liquid pressure is created, it would be pushed up the pipe. You could see what is in the pipe through highlighting the pipe background according to what is in it. E.g. blue for water, red for Magma, and inverting the color of the pipe if a creature is swimming/traveling through it. If you looked at it, you could view the contents of the pipe.

Pipes could be destroyed via standard methods, but also by Magma if it’s not Magma-safe. It would not be toppled by building destroyers.

Hopefully Toady will revisit hydraulics at some point and pipes will be used to transport fluids across vast distances. I strongly disagree with the suggestion building destroyers shouldn't target them. Flooding is fun, and magma flooding is even more !!FUN!!.

In future, would you mind consolidating your ideas a bit before posting. It generally isn't considered good etiquette to fill the first two pages with different threads as it makes it harder for the rest of us to follow the other threads we are interested in.

Improved Mechanics
  • Large pipe sections -- walk on them or crawl inside them, allow passage for fluids
Planned.

Unrelated ideas should be posted in separate threads. There's really no good solution, except to write your ideas down and wait a bit between posts, and also to avoid duplicates.

Also searching, as things have sometimes been mentioned before. (This one of mine immediately came to mind, and was actually the second item on the list when I quick-searched for "crawl pipe" without even using Advanced to also select myself as Author, but as it was under a different umbrella-thread and you won't have been expected to have uncovered it as easily then I don't blame you for not even seeing it or relating it to some of what you suggest here.)

Necroing suggestions-threads is far from verboten, and often prefered if you don't create too much thread-drift.

(Completely new ideas are always possible. Just consider the chances that every 'new' idea you have actually is. And/or practical. And/or in the direction we already know Toady is inclined to go. If a discussion has been had before then you can probably avoid rehashing things. Or build upon the older arguments only once you've got past the archive of things already discussed and found the point at which truly new revelations of yours apply and new ground can be struck.)

We like eagerness to engage (well, I. certainly do - I presume so do others) so this is not to put anyone off. I can't even be sure that I haven't made this error myself, when fresh to the game or even very recently.

No, you're right. I completely flooded the forum with either half-concieved or already-suggested ideas. I made the error repeadedly so it's fine

we do this already with supports, having large pipes be targetable just means more fun and options for traps

I always thought a pipe could be built much like we build and link levers, creating a drain opening in the floor or "Mario Style" facing N/S/E/W. We build a second pipe at our endpoint and link the two pipes using pipe sections, the number needed being determined by the distance being linked. This 'plumbing' would be abstracted out as embedded in various walls and stones and could be interacted with by various critters to enter and exit according to the links and critter size. Fluid will transfer according to the vertical difference between the two pipe openings or through screw pump pressure.
