Author Topic: Why can’t dragons and Hydras (and some other things) have the [CHILD] tag?  (Read 835 times)

This makes baby dragons impossible to fully tame, and some people want that.

If it’s that much of a problem, there should be new tags.

For example, a [CHILD_UNTAMEABLE] tag would replicate this feature.

A [PROTECTS_YOUNG] could be added, and it would attack anything that gets near a child of its type.

Wait, why can't they have the Child tag? Is it broken? Dragons are just as moddable as any other creature as far as I know.

That's the point of a customizable game. Being able to customize so people don't have to make suggestions to tweak creatures exactly the way they want them. Just do it.

But it’s not official. That’s what I’m asking.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Dwarf Fortress is made to be customizable. Officially, actually customizable. That way people don't have to spam the suggestions board with 'please make dragons age a little faster'. You can just do it. That's the beauty of a single player customizable game.

That's why Toady puts so much effort into ensuring as much as possible is customizable (and will be more so in the future). Raws are official, actual options. Think of it as an options menu in a regular game.

Same reason Toady hasn't yet given dragons wings or flight ability, simply because of how easy it is for any player to do themselves.

You can think of the raws as being an extension of the advanced parameters. Certainly how I've come to understand them.

Raws are an options menu. If you don't like something, edit them.

If you can set the regular options for DF you should have no problem setting up basic amendments in the raws...

Oh, well, unless you've been raised on the damn LNP I guess. Should really drop that once you're no longer an 'N'.

Wasn't there once a raw editor with an actual interface? That might help.

To answer the OP post question (apart from the incorrect "can't" part):
Because megabeasts (generally) shouldn't be overpowered toys in the vanilla DF version; that is left for players to change if they wish it to be so.

@Shonai_Dweller: I disagree with your hostility towards the LNP, as I think it's a great package even when the 'N' has faded. Also, there is no reason I know of to ditch the LNP just because you want to adjust a few things.

"Wasn't there once a raw editor with an actual interface? That might help.": An old thread for some kind of raw editor from 2013 has been resurrected in the Utilities sub forum, but I haven't looked at it, as my raw changes are too low scale to need an editor.

Each new generation of kids has been worse than the parents were since at least the Roman empire. Those kids must have been fantastically well behaved (but apparently degenerated as they grew up, if history is any indication).

I know. I think of the game like a shell, and Toady just filled the shell with a bunch of cool stuff. My suggestion was ALSO to add another tag, which was in the form of [PROTECTS_YOUNG]. It would be perfect for wolves and bears as well.

What would a tag achieve?
Protecting offspring should be default behavior of most animals. Yes, it surely would be nice to have animals act more like animals in the game. I expect many suggestion threads on improved animal behavior already exist. It's not achieved through tags. A tag is just a tag. Doesn't do anything by itself.

Your suggestion here is "modders should allow the creation of animals which won't protect their young by having a tag they can remove". Thank you. Not much to discuss here. Not sure why you'd want it in the game.
