It should just be so that you can choose from the wildlife in your area and choose to leave a few animals remaining. It could most likely be it’s own menu

Just restrict the supply of ammunition for hunting purposes.

IIRC, the game spawns little waves of animals from the regional population that, once hunted down, generates a new wave. So unless you kill the animals faster than the regional population breeds them I don't think this will happen.

But you know, there is something to say for being able to designate hunting targets species by species. I still don't know what to do with these chinchilla corpses.

I dunno, drawbridge catapult?

In seriousness that would be nice. Probably just place it under the Orders tab.

Hunters Target: Dangerous Game - The local hunters will seek out predators on the map and attempt to eradicate them, as well as things like hippos, elephants, and giant animals in general. Ignores all other animals. With the economy, this would also likely result in higher pay per successful hunting job done - equivalent to placing a bounty on the animal(s) essentially, due to the inherent danger of trying to hunt bears and elephants.

Hunters Target: Prey - Non-predatory animals such as hares, mountain goats, elk, things of that nature. Hunters will ignore dangerous game unless attacked or they see fellow citizens being attacked.

Hunters Target: Processable game - Anything large enough to produce at least one meat, ignoring things like ravens and chinchillas.

Hunters Target: All animals - Likely the default state, hunters will seek out anything.

Hunters: Ignore fliers - Exactly what it says on the tin. Hunters will not attempt to hunt things capable of flight.

Hunters: Stand Down - Orders the local hunters to stop hunting altogether, either because you don't need them to hunt at the moment or to keep them from skulking out into danger. Useful if you're trying to capture breeding stock of some animal as well.

Additional thing might be to have world-gen hunters be those with a higher-than-normal disdain for nature, and give those with such a dislike a happy thought whenever they complete a hunting job, similar to those with a cultural or just general dislike of nature are satisfied by felling trees. Also it'd be nice for everything to at least produce a skull when brought to the butchery by a hunter, so we don't end up with mounds of ravens and chinchillas cluttering up the place.

We could even doing it squad by squad, with squads to cull predators and others to get bushmeat.

I kind of like that hunters are independent and just go out or down to the caverns and hunt stuff. Not everything has to be micro-managed.

Well fisherdwarves can be managed, as can weavers. Some management on hunters could be useful.

something like the cook/brew tab in the status menu would be nice, as well as the ability to set a custom limit on how many of each creature to hunt per season

Maybe nobles could get involved? King decrees no more poaching elephants.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Some nobles might even do the hunting themselves; hunting was the noble sport in the Middle Ages.

All I could imagine was them wanting gem-encrusted ammo and decorated weapons made from possibly a preferred or the most expensive workable material available to do so. After all, a count cannot possibly be expected to hunt with the plain weapons of groundlings, can he!

Plus that sort of silliness would give a use to a fort that either makes very little use of gems or has more gems of a given type than they have crap to glue them to.

There aren't that many pans big enough. Most people are forced to stick just to eggs.
