On the subject of Fire Imps.
« on: April 16, 2018, 05:55:18 pm »

Alright.  I'm attempting to make fire imps breedable for the purpose of harvesting their leather, because the thought of giving all my military fireproof cloaks appeals to me.  By inserting the following into creature_subterranean.txt under [CREATURE:IMP_FIRE] and lowering the cluster number, I think this will let me farm the little pests without burying the world in fire imps.  Is there something I need to change or fix? Something I'm missing?

Code: [Select]
[CLUSTER_NUMBER:1:1]

[CASTE:FEMALE]
[FEMALE]
[LITTERSIZE:0:1]
[CASTE:MALE]
[MALE]

You'll need to give them pet tags if you want to tame them.  While it is possible to breed wild creatures by trapping them on a map, it will prevent others from spawning so if there's only one per cluster you won't be able to breed them.

Thanks, I completely overlooked that!  Does the cluster number have any effect on the world aside from how many show up on the fortress map?

Make sure they have appropriate [CHILD:X] tokens if you don't want them to spawn fully-formed as adults. While amusing, it can make it more difficult to keep track of successful breeding.

LITTER_SIZE:1:1 can't use 0. That or just remove it all together and add [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE]

they will need at least CHILD tag or they will not breed at all (can use BABY if you want, but animals it's normal to use CHILD)

they will require PET so they can be properly tamed

That hasn't been true since 0.40.06.
