Tolkien also mentioned slaves in the lands we don't see, so that would seem to be a reasonable thing to add later to avoid the silly sight of monstrous farmers.

Immortality is kind of overrated anyhow (just look at Elves).
I have a race of minotaurs that generally don't live beyond 25 years. Like giant fireflies, each life a momentary explosion of hate and fury. By the end of worldgen, they're usually in 1st place for population, with goblins not far behind.

Hilariously, the ones that despise farming in tolkien's world are the dwarves.  Freaking hate it. Pay other races to do it for them.
