Fenced pen/pasture
« on: April 02, 2018, 12:49:36 pm »

I know this suggestion has been made before, I just wanted to make this suggestion as its stand-alone post with a clean comment-section and with a fresh perspective.

A fenced pen/pasture would be a zone which boundaries are being religiously being respected by domesticated animals, civilian dwarves and caravans without having to be a wall thick, while invaders, predators and military dwarves would path through them with a slight penalty to speed when passing the boundaries, and building-destroyers would trample it to bits.

This could either be achieved as an alternative pen/pasture zone that require wood/stone/metal before it can be used, or that pen/pasture zones could be upgradable.

Would the boundary be visually a tile thick (i did read you said to to dissuade away from walls, just asking for clarity) or a psuedo crossable 1/4 tile symbol of sorts? A bit like the distortion of caravans being 1 tile actually but 3x3 spritewise.

I usually use grates and pet locked doors to keep my creatures in makeshift pens, usually grazers are alright out in the open unless they are spooked so i see the practicality of preventing animals running off, but it feels like cheating to completely enforce it, especially if you can zone it all the way down to a immovable 1x1 for some purpose. That's my two cents besides my question.

Was more thinking that the edge of the pen/pasture would simply have a visibly thicker outer line to indicate that it's a fenced pen/pasture.
The whole point of the fence idea is for it to not take up as much space as a constructed wall.

It could use the tiles used for tent walls in adventure mode, maybe.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

So, I guess we're waiting for the op give us the new line of thought...
