I had been thinking miniature flak rounds. Like 20-30mms with proximity detonation to strong EMFs or timers set by a computer monitoring the drones distance and velocity. I bet that's not exactly trivial either.

Iirc, most of the problem's just... knowing where the things are. Actually knocking them out the sky if you have targeting is much less of an issue, and one that doesn't need much or anything in the way of fancy new technology. If it's big, normal antiaircraft measures work. If it's small, you can literally treat them like skeet or whatever, folks have been knocking smaller drones down with shotguns.

Drones aren't some kind of magic, you don't need special munitions to drop them. If you've gotten to the point you're firing at them it's just about certainly going to be more cost effective and just as efficient to just shoot them with normal junk. It's boring, but you're better off saving the fancy junk for hacking and crap.

Ya drone warfare just sucks in a shitty dystopian way. Taking a shit? FPV drone blows you up after it flies in through the blasted windows. Walking under the cover of night? Drone with thermals bought from temu give your location to air forces. Driving along a road? Autonomous loitering drone on a patrol path overhead has just identified you as an target shaped object and gets a digital shot of dopamine when humans explode

The future drone wars don't sound nearly as interesting as things made them sound a few years ago.

what I wanted

SPAWN MORE OVERLORDS

what I got

Cruise missiles kinda expensive let's replace them with smaller drones. Small drones kinda lacking in survivability let's give them higher speed with better propulsion. Hey we can fit more payload on them now too so they can take down bigger targets. We could even use these on air bases and ships! Aaaaaand we've reinvented the cruise missile

Indeed. I was hoping for drone carriers as well. And large insect / mouse sized crawler drones.

tbh I hope weaponised insect sized drones stay scifi for now. Don't want CIA running around giving everyone untraceable poisons from the backs of robosquitoes just yet

It's a cruise missile... But it loiters!

We've turned the aerial battlefield into a dilapidated estate's unkempt park. Except the loiterers in the sky don't do drugs.

You don't think they get a brief shot of digital dopamine and serotonin just before they explode?

I can't wait for them to invent digital drugs so we can get the drones hooked on them, then convince the drones to attack things in exchange for these drugs.

Step 1: Work out how to create a program that can feel emotions.

Step 2: Give it a reward circuit for a task well done.

Step 3: Make a chunk of code that does nothing but trigger that reward circuit without a task.

There you go, you now have an e-drug.

A thought to hold on to in these crazy times. Most other I's, you's and thems in the multiverse are okay. Our own local universe is an anomaly, with there only being one universe in which we are worse off.

In that universe, 'Baby Shark' managed to be at the first place of the EU's top 100 for 3 months.
As a result, in that universe, Earth is about to be destroyed as directed by the Interdimensional Council's Planetary Euthanasia Protocol.

Something about this feels a bit redundant...

If you make a program that can feel emotions and just give it a reward circuit, that's not an e-drug, that's just a regular old permanently happy program.

Just make sure the amount of happiness is constantly increasing because programs always want the most rewards.
