big part of the decline may be because for a good while it was impossible to register a new account, or it took several weeks to get approved

The End Of Bays seems like the best name for that horrible event, and launching the server into a volcano in the end seems like a properly dwarven way to send the forum off.

We'll just need to be sure and engrave a slab for it so we don't get haunted by the forum's ghost.

My random thought is that I won't be voting for these charlatans at the national level unless a central plank is campaign finance reform. The state level governor race also does not look good; it is one of those 19 candidate primaries already that the centrists use to disempower everyone else in order to do corporate oligargy and bribetaking from goodness knows where. In addition there is also a Joe Manchin in the form of Mike Duggan. I would like to point out that this reminds me of Putin's managed democracy as it appears to be being used to split support among opposition.

In conclusion, to earn my vote and not have me speaking my truth about them to everyone who will listen because I do not like them, the Democrats must adopt a plank of campaign finance reform and also articulate effective policy on how to achieve it. Do I expect this? No, I expect them to lose badly but make money doing it, which seems to be the important thing to the faction which has made squeezing everyone else out a priority.

My random predictions for the near future.

1st quarter of 2025: During what historians will call 'The Moment of Truth', no one is exactly sure what happened to the angry mob of unemployed fact-checkers
2nd quarter of 2025: Trump invades Alaska because he thought it was Greenland
3d quarter of 2025: Something with Canada
4th quarter of 2025: Elon Musk is infected with foreign malware and needs to be factory reset
1st quarter of 2026: The price of popcorn exceeds the price of gold
2nd quarter of 2026: Mexico closes the borders with the US because it cannot support any more Canadian refugees
3d quarter of 2026: Belgium enters the 21st century and is promptly annexed by Luxembourg
4th quarter of 2026: The UK strikes a deal with Rwanda. All Canadian boat refugees who failed the english language part of the citizenship exams will be sent there.

I realized today that many (but not all) of the things that people argue about regarding "fact checkers" are not actually matters of fact.

For example, true matters of fact are immune from bias: this object reflects light at a wavelength of 600nanometers. The cost of a dozen eggs in the store I visited this morning was $2.89/dozen.

The only way things start getting into bias are things that aren't matters of fact, but are rater matters of interpretation or preference.  The price of eggs is high because of X. The color would have been better if it was 590nm.

The interesting thing is that, while I would hope that the distinction might be used as an opportunity to start mending social rifts, instead people will just be like "oh it doesn't matter" or "that in and of itself is some kind of nefarious agenda!"

That is, when people say "that is your truth" then it's not a truth at all, it's a belief regarding an interpretation.  The fact that we have allowed people to confuse belief with truth is... interesting. Fun actual fact, though, is that this was something that was predicted several decades ago (or earlier; I remember it being discussed when I was an undergrad 25+ years ago) as an inevitable outcome of post-modernism.

You know those forum games where there is a character the players collectively control?

Imagine that, but with the character being aware of it. GM rolls resistance rolls for them and insuniation rolls for the players. If the character rolls higher, they resist the action being taken. If the player(s) do, the character does it compulsively. More players agree on a single action, higher their resistance roll has to be.

All of this happens with the appropriate roleplaying and flavor... I wonder how messed up things can get, or if the voices will be helpful.

twitch plays caligula simulator 2025, huh

... I have seen some quests where the character's aware of the suggestions and able and willing to ignore particularly terrible ones, even when they're popular, though. Hell if I can remember when, it's been a few years since I've even tried to read one of the things.

McCreary's Planet was a little like that. Most SGs aren't, though.
