You command the trolls to reinforce the right flank. They lumber off obediently, and they clear a way through the throng of warriors.
The presence in your mind returns, testing your defenses. You sense weakness, and open a sliver in your mental barrier to attack.
Darkness falls.
“Deceiver. “
The Deceiver looks up. He stands in a garden, bathed in a golden light. At the center lays a small pond, fed by babbling creeks that run cross the enclosed space. Waving plants and trees provide shelter and life. The dark brown soil crumbles beneath his feet. Stone walls surround the garden, and the sky stretches out overhead. A doorway shrouded in shadow lies before you.
Wearing glossy black plate, inlaid with silver that glides through the armor like a vine over a tree, the Deceiver looks around, expression guarded. He remembered this place, this garden. His armor disappears, changing into flowing tan robes with green trim. Eyes wide, he stared at the garden, his robes, trying desperately to pierce back together what was shattered. He could not remember.
“The signs did not lie. You have returned,” said the voice, weary. The Deceiver could sense the sorrow, the pain of those words.
“Who are you?” The Deceiver asks carefully.
“Ahh, so you don’t remember? The wards we placed were somewhat effective, then.”
The Deceiver curses inwardly at revealing this lack. He glances at the doorway. The shadows peel back and show a hooded figure, blue eyes piercing. The Deceiver struggles to place a name, anything, but can’t get past the familiarity of the face.
The eyes stare coldly at you, “I am Cematriku. I killed you. “
His name was like the turning of a key in a lock. Memories came back. Of his face smiling, laughing, weeping. Of watching legions clash on the field, Cematriku commanding storms of fire as the Deceiver turned the enemies commanders against each other. Of a blaze of fire bursting through your chest, and Cematriku standing there, face stoney as he watched the Deceiver, you, die.
Betrayal. The Deceiver committed it many times, but rarely did he feel its sting. He turned his eyes to look upon the wizard. His mind was well guarded, but this interaction was mental. This was the Deceivers element.
