(Hard)(1+1)-1=2 Utter failure

You set out to find Statheros , currently residing on the outskirts of the capital city. You find him naked, living in an orichalcum barrel placed on top of a fire. He likes the sound he says. The recipe for that orichalcum alloy which allows him to stay on top of his beloved fire seems to indeed be his only concession to proper technology, probably coming from the former mint of his father. For the rest, he lives without clothes, without tools, eating and drinking like an animal.

Now comes the hard part: convincing him to part with his secrets.  You offer him wealth, fame, power, land. You offer everything you could think of until, exhausted, you ask him if there is anything he wants. To which he replies, “Yes. Stand a little out of my sun, stop talking near my fire and get lost”. You briefly consider that he may actually give you the alloy if you do that. Alas, he does not and instead turns to obscene acts in order to ‘relieve the stress of a bunch of hypocrites trying to steal his home’.

Man I love being on the team with the 1s every time. How about something like this that could possibly work.

Protection of the Big Bird: Using our Protection of the Bigger Fish as a basis for this idea, our smiths have created barding to provide to our Aetokos. The scale armor primarily protects the front and flanks, and includes blinders to narrow the Aetokos' field of view and, hopefully, make it less likely to panic in battle.

Next turn we need to design something offensive, and either go huge or go small to maximize the success we're due or minimize the damage we're bound to get.

I think explosion-absorbing armour is still a good idea. We need some way to counter (or rather, reduce the efficacy of) their staves.

For now, we should either revise our birbs or our artillery. Birbwise, I think training is more important than armour.

Artillery upgrade option:

Spring Orichalcum MkV: For literally the fifth time we're going to try to find the perfect recipe for spring-Orichalcum. We're this close. Our alchemists have written entire tomes on the subject, and they are certain that they have, this time, figured out what makes Orichalcum spring- and all it'll take is a little more funding for them to put it into practice.
Specifically, they believe that they can not only solve the problem of less energy being put out than is put in, but in fact reverse it- that is, it 'springs back' with more force than it was pulled out of shape with. For example, a bow with a 100lb draw would fire like a bow with a 120lb draw. How is this possible? Aesystrofi claims that "sympathetic monodirectional potential based on phase-shifted energy reserves" is the cause. Yeah, there's a reason we generally zone out when philosophers start explaining things.
Once we have it, we will be able to upgrade both our bows and our polianthi, the latter especially being brought up to the level we all know it is capable of.

I think we've used enough of our actions on that development path for now. We should try something different for our artillery, like

Morokias: With our Polianthions not firing as powerfully as we'd expect, we've decided to down-size the ammunition and the weapon itself while retaining the size of the springs and other mechanisms. If the designs work as expected, the Morokias should fire smaller bolts at the same range as the Polianthion while also becoming cheaper than it's parent weapon.

The idea here being we get massed fire in this turn. Next turn I suggest we use our design to research properties of orichalcum in great detail, then use our next revision for the spring. If we know how the orichalcum works then we should get some sort of bonus to our spring roll. Heh.

I have added a paragraph to my proposal, since I thought it wasn't ambitious enough. It violates the (conventional) laws of physics, but then that's the whole point of Orichalcum, isn't it?

(Normal)(1+4)=5 Average
Fifth time is the charm, or so they say. Where they, of course, refers to your alchemists and smiths.
The current alloy loses a significant quantity of energy when springing back. But it turns out that inverting the quantities of some critical components, you also invert the effect: now you get more energy out of it than you put in, which you are sure would annoy some people to no end, if you had the concept of conservation of energy. Your bows, already powerful, gain in range and the polianthion reaches its full potential. It can even outrange the enemy cannon, if at lower accuracy than its design range.

Statheros's Koneio Armour: Tragic news; the esteemed philosopher Statheros passed away today, after accidentally consuming twelve bushels of hemlock. Yes, a handful of leaves is enough to kill a man, but we wanted to be sure. I mean, uh... oh, whatever, no one liked the guy anyway. And now that he's dead, no one can stop us nicking his barrel and figuring out how it was made. Our goal is the same as last year; explosion-absorbing armour, with a priority on shields.

Aegis of Zeus
In one of the battles we have fought with the foul children of Thebes, a lightning bolt struck, the very face of Zeus's disfavor of our foes. And when that bolt struck, the men reported that it caused the projectiles of the strange fire-staves our enemy uses to bend in mid flight! Obviously, some stolen secret of Zeus (thus why he dislikes them probably) is at work here, which is why it can be effected by Zeus's power. Now it is well known that, when forged in certain manners, orichalcum can be caused to release sparks.

As such, in order to claim the Protection of Zeus, we shall refine these recipes until we successfully craft orichalcum infused with the freely granted power of the Sky-God, and then use this new orichalcum to design shields for our high guards. Shields able to trump the enemy's power with power of their own!
