Dark Souls Remastered: Praise the Early Release!
« on: March 28, 2018, 04:35:28 pm »

May 25th it's out

It's out now!

-Featuring the new multiplayer system from DS3, 1-6 players at a time (no more peer-to-peer)
-60 fps
-1080p resolution (up from 720)
-DLC from the original is included
-Nintendo switch, xbox one, ps4, and pc versions

Dark souls is one of my favorite games of all time, and a remaster will help revitalize the community that has grown over the past two games. I'm pretty pumped, anyone else?

I just played this game for the first time a few months ago. Will this mean I no longer have to use the terrible PC port?
Or I'll just wait till I get a Switch and play it along with the large backlog of Nintendo titles I've missed since I went to college.
Good news, either way.

I heard that the PC port is getting a proper go over this time thankfully, which isn't surprising to be honest. Considering how DS2 & DS3 were leagues better, and that they are outsourcing to a company that does remasters, I'd have faith that it'll be good.

I might start a password session for the duration of the weekend of the remaster's release, perhaps longer, for forum members if enough are interested, on the PC version.

My body is ready. Just romped through DS3 with three friends, and I’m ready to die some more.

Much as I enjoy this series, it's the kind of thing that I finish each boss once and then say 'never again'.

I can only imagine what the poor, unsuspecting sobs who pick up the remaster as their entry into the series will think when the darkwraith4lyfers who've been honing their skills since the original came out first start invading.

I'm pretty excited to start invading again in DS1. The mechanics are quite different from the other two and it might take new players a little while to adjust.

So they're keeping the mechanics from DS1 the same then? Other than MP? I figured they would coopt more mechanics from later DS games. Like Bonfire teleportation.

I think it's all the same - I had hoped they'd have added a few quality of life additions from later series. I think the best we can expect is a slightly upgraded inventory and maybe some slight patching of broken stuff.

I have to say that whilst I'm a huge fan of Dark Souls, DS1 is the only one where I completed it and never went back to it/did the DLC. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, just that I found it so clunky and obscure in parts that it was difficult to get through .

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

For the most part, yes. However, with the multiplayer tweaks, I have a hunch that other small quality of life things might be coming, like being able to use more than one soul item at a time, for instance. That being said, I have not seen any confirmation of things like that, so it may just be wishful thinking.

As far as bonfire teleportation goes, I would be quite surprised if they added it. When I played for the first time the lack of a teleportation option made finding a shortcut feel absolutely amazing, especially the one from undead burg to firelink.

Oh I agree. My DS1 experience was defined by that. But with the last two games angling more toward accessibility, it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

I personally hope that the only things they change other than multi is letting you twohand the weapon in your left hand and letting you free aim crossbows like you can bows. Eating souls one at a time builds character.

Thoughts on omni directional dodge rolling? Playing through DS1 after DS3 felt weird at first since I was so used to it, but I'm on the fence about whether or not it would be something I want.

I was also thinking about how the 30fps -> 60fps might change the feel of the game overall, particularly combat.

Hehe, I've always played in 60fps anyway.
I like the feel of combat in DS1 compared to DS3. Less demanding on the reflexes, if you want you can just Poise through most things rather than having to dodge everything.

It also felt more less reflex & panic reacting heavy, and more concise & being smart about the situations you find yourself in. The rework of poise in DS3 for example meant that you either had to block, dodge, or strike first, while in DS1 you had those options as well as being able to poise through damage.

The rework of poise also indirectly damaged the RP value in the series, as being a knight who "isn't easily toppled" wasn't reflected well in DS3 when you could be staggered by relatively minor hits, which doesn't feel like something that would happen to a knight.

And I tried that 60fps mod for DS1 and it was... rather buggy haha. I went to rest at a bonfire, and the game rested as well.
