Haven’t played too long yet, but liking it so far. Rambly thoughts: they’ve removed some of the more annoying parts of the combat and improved on level design, it feels like. Story starts off much more interesting than in the first game. The fact the game wouldn’t remember my imported save’s character’s race, background, etc. was really annoying - those choices seem to come in play much more often in dialogue though, which is nice. The soundtrack is great, very atmospheric. Liking the new characters I’ve met; companions now engage and interject more in conversations you have, have their own likes and dislikes, track relationships between eachother and you, plus their skills can be used in skill-based dialogue checks which makes it a whole lot more useful to invest in their skills.

No backer NPCs anywhere, hurray. All in all, I’m optimistic - they seem to have improved on the first a great deal.

I like it loads better than PoE 1.

1. Character creation is amazing (the plot around it is really annoying-I can't wait for an easy char gen mod-sometimes you just want to play around with builds, not listen to the infodump again and again). Multiclassing was exactly what the first game was missing--and it is designed for maximum ease of play. I am playing what is effectively a Psion/Rogue, a combination I haven't been able to play since the Dark Sun games.

2. The world feels less restrained--I am ignoring the main plot, to sail and pirate. It reminds me of Skull and Shackles, the Pathfinder pirate adventure path, and variously encourages the comparison.

3.  Random encounters--the first did it like BG did it--every area was scattered with little groups of enemies you'd kill and kill and kill until you were both really bored, and in the case of PoE, were no longer getting xp for killing.

Now, it is more like you land on a little island, because you thought to yourself--hey, that little island looks desolate and full of treasure--not because it is on the way to the next city or anything-- and have a set number of encounters you choose to have, they are all semi-scripted fights with opportunities to use your skills for ambush/advantage, and sometimes, afterwards, you get to name the island.

Tiny little 272 byte (yes, byte, not kilobyte) patch, wut. Anyhow, waiting on the hotfix patch for the legacy import stuff.

Though I guess I could mess around and create my own background or something.

I’m getting close to the end of the main story and have completed a ton of side quests. Man, this game is big. With so many moving parts Obsidian’s traditional bugs are starting to show, though - broken quests and conversations about things I haven’t done but the game thinks I have. Nothing game-breaking yet, but very much annoying. There’s also a persistent bug where I can’t click on certain things without moving the camera to a different spot.

Otherwise it’s an improvement all around. There’s so many little things that make combat more enjoyable, from clearer UIs to multiclassing to simpler and better resting. The main storyline is compelling, and the side stuff tends to be too. Character interactions and the possibilities of expressing your fella in various ways is maybe the best part - my imported Rautaui Coastal Aumaua has a much more personal stake in the politics of the region  than I was expecting. That said, sometimes the background-specific dialogue and options are glaringly missing - you’d expect my Slave background to come into play when dealing with slavers, but no.

I like how complex the politics are. The closest comparison is Morrowind—no good guys, no bad guys, just a lot of complicated motives all around.

The natives just want to live in peace under their hideously oppressive caste system.

The Rautaui just want to unite the archipelago and bring their bretheren into the modern world—for the small price of total imperial domination.

The Valians just want money, but they are also the single most progressive force in the region,spreading the wealth and animancy research freely.

The pirates are just a good bit of fun, except for how they are increasingly involved with slavers despite it being against their rules and values.
