I don't think it takes 30 gnomes to check some books. Can't we do both? Let the 3 or 4 most capable intellectuals search the books, and let the rest share weapons and tactics and stuff. Do we have an alchemist/chemist who can take a closer look at the white stuff without touching or even tasting it? We are gnomes, not donkeys.

Honestly, I think we should take this in a different direction. We do not yet have an established food supply here and I think that takes precedence over preparing to defend against something that might not even be out to get us.

I'd say have one of the smarter gnomes look for information about them while everyone else investigates the possible ways we can obtain food, and we can discuss defenses after we do our research.

So.... I guess we do individual actions now?

Adjute the magitechnician (or did I say technowizard? same thing) is now assembling wooden buildings out of planks and nails. He makes one big building to house all the workshops, and assembles several dormitories out of the rest of the materials.

"I rather hate all this repetitive, menial labor, but I suppose someone's gotta do it."

EDIT: Using my Dwarf Fortress knowledge here, I think the first things we should do are get some buildings up (which my character is doing), plant some fields, build some workshops, and start making arms and armor for our militia. Anyone else want to take some of these jobs, my character's hands are pretty full.
