Goblins demanding children as tribute
« on: March 24, 2018, 02:49:50 pm »

In some bizzare scenario despite harbouring a deep hatred for goblin culture and ethics, a weary player has made a uneasy but enforced truce with the goblins for a period of relative peace. Or maybe another site of your civ you're a part of as a whole has on your behalf, who knows.

Now to enact this truce, periodically the civilisation must now send away their children to the dark towers when the goblins demand it every 10 years or recieve a artifact (your own or someone else's) to prove the civilization's continuing dedication to the truce, in exchange for stopping the aggression & snatching.

Being one of the diplomatic options you could partake in with goblins because they have no facilities to offer rudimentary trades for the typical fortress player to endanger when all the tree felling and children offering quota's all become too much and they activate the magma doomsday device.

How do we decide whose children to send?

You pick from a shortlist of names in a diplomatic topical agreement, counterbargain something of equal value or outright refuse the grotty goblin diplomat who angrily storms off map spitting at bystanders out to deliver the bad news to the dark tower.

It hurts relations to offer less children than the set amount that they want, which tests the diplomats patience, too many transgressions with offering too few children and it'll trigger a war over your broken formal agreement. Sort of like how elves express disappointment if you only skim by your tree quota more and more, angrily hissed through goblin teeth.

If you win the siege in a timely fashion and build yourself back up, you may still be able to save some children from the towers, or children extorted out of other civilizations stuck in these agreements.

This reminds me...
Quote
In Greek mythology Minos was the first King of Crete, son of Zeus and Europa. Every nine years, he made King Aegeus pick seven young boys and seven young girls to be sent to Daedalus's creation, the labyrinth, to be eaten by the Minotaur. After his death, Minos became a judge of the dead in the underworld.

Otherwise, it's pretty neat idea.

Send them all, just in case?

I suppose there is a lot of haggling here about ages.  As present mechanics stand, older children are more valuable to the goblins than younger ones because they magically turn into goblins when they turn 12.

Is this canon?

No. They're just brainwashed into behaving like goblins.

Crud, I was hoping there was some sort of actual magic or something that transformed them, maybe involving a specialized structure and ritual, and alignment of celestial bodies.

Next release will implement magic. Magic is almost non-existent right now.

Just to make it clear, "sudden transformation at 12" is a mechanic. Not lore.
Here's some lore:

Yes, I did mean it was a mechanic.  Sorry that people took it literally, I suppose the word magical does not have the same connotations in a fantasy game as it normally would!  :D ;)

The actual april report actually indicates that between now and then Toady will be busy fixing bugs and implementing some minor features of this arc where he can between a 'estimated' buildup of six months at about october - novembertime but it might spill over schedule and be late, who knows.

There's nothing innately wrong with it, maybe goblins in a set of conditions in mythgen might be mutated elves who in turn contact magic users to mutate more elven prisoners they capture directly as a example of how the magic can interact.

"Releases" (the way Kittytac is using the word) come in several updates at a time over the course of a few months (10 in this case, apparently which is bigger than usual). Nobody's under the delusion that magic is coming in the next couple of weeks. There's a couple of years until that release probably.
