I meant more as a "the colony can catch and eat individual organisms" as our next evolution.

First, we should gain a mitochondrion like organelle so that we can break down stuff into energy more efficiently, and more complex things as well
+1 to the mitochondrion, but not to the rest of that

I knew that, but we don't even have cellular respiration yet, so it would be useless.

This could end bad

Damnit people, this is why I said to keep the truce. Because now everyone's ganging up on the cats.
Also, don't forget to contact your local Eldritch Being(s), so that they can help with our mission to destroy the universe.

Rhizospheric Colonization

Our Multi cellular colonies can root themselves onto the groun of our underwater world, and possibly dig into the soil a tad to harvest buried nutritional value.

How about we speciate a variety that can photosynthesize, for when we go carnivorous.

I second this BUT we keep our mobile larval stage. We can go neotenic and speciate from that if we get tired of being immobile.

Some cells in the center of a colony specialize to create and release enzymes that can wipe out the pathogens by rupturing their cell membranes. Ideally our cells would be resistant to this, but if collateral damage is necessary to wipe out the pathogens then so be it.

Long ago our cells were infected by viroids. At one point, by chance, their genome has been integrated into ours. Restriction enzymes we have evolved protect us from infection, but due to their insertion into the genome our cells begin producing viroids at a low but steady rate. These are shed into the water around our colonies, serving a symbiotic role as they destroy bacteria and predators that get close.

I was going to suggest basically the same thing. History tells us that symbiotising your pathogens is a great life strategy!
