I second this BUT we keep our mobile larval stage. We can go neotenic and speciate from that if we get tired of being immobile.

Some cells in the center of a colony specialize to create and release enzymes that can wipe out the pathogens by rupturing their cell membranes. Ideally our cells would be resistant to this, but if collateral damage is necessary to wipe out the pathogens then so be it.

Restriction enzymes we have evolved protect us from infection, but due to their insertion into the genome our cells begin producing viroids at a low but steady rate. These are shed into the water around our colonies, serving a symbiotic role as they destroy bacteria and predators that get close.
