Won my first and only run of the game so far. Was pretty fun, got all the achievements for the starting squad and cleared all 4 islands. Either RNG was kind or normal difficulty isn't as that hard. Will need to try more runs.

Just managed to finish the game with every squad (except Blitzkrieg, which I can't just pull off in any decency for some reason, and Custom, which I haven't gotten around for trying for achieves/Hard yet) with a surprisingly easy Lucky Start Random Squad on Normal (Jet, Defense, Artillery), plus three of them on Hard. No 'perfect' game yet, with all citizens saved yet, though (off by one). The first few maps are surprisingly hard, before you get more reactors or armaments.

The squads actually feel a lot more balanced in play than they appeared at a glance, but you really have to play to their specialties and avoid their weaknesses or you're going to be in pain. Even more than the squad though (Random excepted), the pilots are key. Vera's one of my favorites at Med/Hard, especially for flying classes, since she'll have absolutely fantastic mobility and can easily act as frontline defense with her inability to get webbed. Especially good with Rusting Hulks. On the other hand, Karlsson is practically useless, except as a replacement for a generic... yay for bonus xp?

Karlsson is your starter guy, he's not supposed to be extra powerful. On the other hand, he's also a great replacement for a generic if you get him towards the end of the campaign, since he can get his second skill quickly.

Blitzkrieg is a ridiculous bunch. The electric whip is glorious, I once pulled off a custom flyer squad victory (Jet, Defense, Nano mechs) thanks to getting it on the first island. You really, really have to be ready to sacrifice your own mechs' health to plug breaks in the chain when you need to. Get the armored pilot and put him into the Boulder Mech so that both of the support units take reduced damage from the chaining. And remember that rocks from the rock accelerator also continue the chain. Get the building-chain upgrade for the whip as soon as you can, and you'll be destroying everything on the map soon enough. (just, uh. Be careful when you have non-Grid support buldings around. Like the terraformer. The whip chains to them too, but still causes damage because they're not Grid. And of course make sure to keep mission-critical allied units away from the chains)

Threw this on my wishlist a month back because I loved Advance Wars and I loved FTL. Glad it's getting positive reactions.

PTW. I've been wanting an XCOM-ish turn based tactical mech game for a while. Can't wait for this game to go on sale.

Ummm, You do know Harebrained Schemes is launching Battletech next month, right?  Prolly wont be on sale for awhile, though, so if you're wanting a sale game, this one does look like it'd do it.

No, never heard of them. Looks cool, but I doubt my computer can run it. Added to my wishlist though.

So I decided to check out my stats page. Apparently I'm up to 5 wins out of 11 games (4 2-island, 1 3-island), with 945 total enemy kills.

Sadly, my deadliest enemy is none other than... the Satellite Rocket (with 2 mech kills).  ::)
I'm pretty sure this shows off a fundamental lack of tactical planning on my part.

(For those of you not familiar with the game, the rocket is a friendly unit that you have to protect for several turns until it launches... at which point it kills anything in the cardinal directions around it.)

Shoot, it keeps track of that? I have a LOT of deaths then, since I had one run where that ramming mech died early on (to save a reactor objective... worthy trade) so I just let it charge into things to its death, or intentionally die on spawn point to permanently clog it, for the rest of the game. Whoops.

I'm surprised people like the ramming mech team because to me they seem pretty lousy. Worse than the starting team. Possibly marginally better than Steel Judokas

Ramming mech is not so great. Laser mech is amazing, though. The science mech on that team is kinda meh, but not bad at least. How good it is does seem to depend a lot more on what pilots and gear you get early on compared to some others. Kinda like the Blitzkrieg team in that regard.

At least in my fairly limited experience.

Laser mech is one of the worst due to the sheer friendly fire potential, IMO. Ramming mech is a shittier version of the Rift Walker's prime (which causes 2 damage with no damage to itself off the shelf, and can be enhaced to dash).
My best results have been with Rusting Hulks (yeah, captain obvious I know :p). I've also won with flaming behemoths.

I find Frozen titans underwhelming. Aegis mech is great. Tank not so much. Freezing mech can be useful for crowd control despite the poor fire rate.

Blitzkrieg.. is nowhere near as bad as Zephyr guard IMO. Rock accelerator is very good. Hook tank is... not brilliant but decent. Main problem is lightning mech's friendly fire (like the Zephyr Guard and their laser mech)

Depends on your play style I guess. I just very handily won a Zenith Guard run and had no problem with FF from the Laser mech. Although I had a *very* good team of pilots and got a teleporter for the science ship. Put Archimedes in there (bonus move after acting) and I was usually able to completely control the battlefield most maps.

The ramming mech was subpar but useful. I tried a few different secondaries on it and ended with the Light Tank.

It was a good run, and I had a lot of fun. Haven't tried Steel Judoku or Frozen Titans yet. Really enjoyed Flaming Behemoths though I lost that run to grid damage on the very last turn of the final battle.

Zenith Guard and Rusting Hulks are two of the teams I've won on Hard with so... yeah. Love 'em both.

The Ramming Mech is outstanding for the first two islands, since it hits fairly hard at that point and has infinite linear mobility. It rapidly falls off in damage though, become more valuable as a shove, so you need to get a good secondary for it. The Shield Projector is good for protecting it, especially if you can land the other shield somewhere useful. The Laser Mech just does a ton of damage and is good to soften up a crowded map. (And, don't forget that Attraction Pulse is a perfectly viable source of damage, if you don't mind bashing your face into it...)

Frozen is kind of awkward. Aegis is great for defense and offense; Mirror Mech annoys me, but is pretty important to the team; you either need to park your Ice Mech where it'll get shot in the upcoming round, or you can just use Mirror to bust it out on your own terms.

I still hate Blitzkreig. You've got a pull (but not the shielding that Zenith gets), an awkward push with Boulder Mech (lots of buildings on your map? Good luck not knocking somebody into something...), and that electric whip that'll also kill yourself with friendly fire, yet doesn't do the 3 damage to a point-blank target that the Laser does.
