how do i name my animals and pets?

i just caught a green tree frog and i want to name it pepe.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that there is no way to do this using the DF interface (Feels bad man).

You can do this in dwarf therapist though.

Add the "Animals" Grid view.

Right click the animal.

Set Nickname.

Commit.

The problem with the DT way is that it's not visible in DF. If you're using DFHack you can use the DFHack naming command usually bound to ctrl-shift-n. Also works great to name the levers (so you remember what they control), etc.

Pets are only named when a dwarf adopts them, and the name is random.

Technically true. The DFHack naming assigns a nick name. It is possible to assign a true name by writing a script co-opting the adventurer naming screen, and I believe such a script has been posted on the forums (names.lua?).
