got it in one. 3D Studio Max - I'm totally self taught (please don't question that one to much) , but I realised that I've never taught myself to do buildings and the like. so i thought I'd do this.
and as for the next version, I'm going to restart the whole thing when that comes out, and try and do the outside of a fort. to teach myself terrain. I know this may seem pointless to some people, but as I'm doing it for myself I just thought some people would like to see them, rather than sitting on my computer

EDIT - Just lost Bartreaty to a goblin siege - I've not been playing long, and this was only my third siege ever. some evil looking goblin broke down or otherwise managed to get past the door, and soon the whole army was into the fortress. my dwarves never stood a chance, and despite their best effots the goblins were soon going room to room (very methodically I might add) butchering the wounded dwarves from the last siege.
lucky I hurredly exported a BMP map, so i can continue to work from that
