So much hairbreads oh my god. Little Sean outbreads everyone at age 4. I just realized dwarven kids are actually fully bearded, how can I have missed that so far.

lol no problem, it's just a doodle and that was really fun to draw. Comfy lil dorf family. The baby's description made me chuckle :D

Tho, to come back to the topic, I really consider the RP to be the soul of any game involving imagination or any kind of pretend, be it tabletop miniatures, p&p rpgs or games like DF, but as a part of my game ethic, I consider that whenever gameplay and roleplay come in conflict, the gameplay is king. Roleplay is used to explain otherwise unexplainable events and to make sense of the world, Gameplay is the physics of the universe.

Some five-six years ago, I remember having played that online political/warfare online simulation. We attacked another country, we lost, were captured as officers and put in jail. Then my commender sent mails to the country's minister to weasel us out, saying it was roleplay and they should really let us go. I felt that really wrong, since our opponents really earned their victory and have played loyally. I feel the same with DF. I prefer to manipulate the roleplay to fit the gameplay than vice-versa. If a character dies, I don't want to revive him or savescum because I had story plans for him, I prefer to write an account of his death and decide how it affects my character instead

Update via wife:

The news that someone drew Mr. Beard is wonderful, the drawing is wonderful, she loves it, and it's amazing. Quotes.

I'm inclined to agree with the other users on here - if you want the game to be really fun you need to roleplay quite a bit and do self-imposed challenges. If you only metagame then DF isn't really fun, since its way too easy in its current state. You can wall yourself off and have an easily self-sustainable fortress that has no contact with the overworld, but as one would imagine its rather boring with nothing to threaten you, either from the inside or outside.

Aw, that beardboy is adorable. Its kind of cute in a quirky not-intended way that dwarven kids come out of the womb with fully styled hair. Your art is fantastic as always, I gotta say.

Have you thought of checking out some of the older posts on the adventure board? There's quite a lot of art-worthy stuff there.

Thank you ! Also I'll be sure to check it out. I'm more interested in ongoing stuff, because it encourages people to keep writing cool stories and makes me feel Im contributing to them somehow.

Right now I decided to have the comfiest DF adventure ever, just taking a stroll from a city to another. I took some stonesense screenshots, markdowned the descriptions of some people I met, and I'm just writing the non-story of my little stroll. Absolutely no stake but to chill, enjoy my little world and just take a nice little walk in my character shoes. I'll be posting my virtual fantasy travel book to the "draw your adventures" subforum when it's done :3

I dunno. It's...experimental. But if modern artists can get away with selling sculptures made of their own feces I should get away with making a fightless actionless emotion/ambiance driven DF story. The challenge for me  is not so much to be able to feel, it's more to be able to share the feel in the end

I should do that sometime, whenever I'm done with my current modding project - I always enjoy grabbing coins and stuff in adventure mode and looking at them, they often have interesting bits of history on them or just cool engravings; though I rarely go for pacifistic runs for the most part.

I'm currently embarking on a quest to build an aboveground dwarf society. Theoretically I'm making a kind of scholarly enclave where the society is devoted to intellectual pursuits, and lives in a tall "wizards tower" type structure rather than living underground. Once things get going I plan to buy most of my food rather than producing it (I lucked into a site with lots of silver so shouldn't be too hard economically.) Ultimately the only underground structures will be my mines, and everything else will take place above ground for art and science.

I once tried to make a fort based on conservation.
The idea would be to minimize the impact on the surface buy having everything underground.
Other goals were to not kill animals if needed too, and no cutting trees.

The overal plan was to make elves more dwarven by keeping them from fondling the trees.

When I showed up in the misty pine forest on the coast, I ran into a lot of problems with getting elves in while keeping dwarves out.

My roleplay is based on the goal of the settlement.  Was it started to be an abbey to collect knowledge?  A city know of exporting toys?  A religious center?

In fact I am thinking about making an Island settlement next with above ground structures and make it as primitive as can be. Something like this...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But, of course, more Dwarfy...

I just need to find a island totally cut off. I need to find out how to make more islands during world gen.

I embark with a mission in mind, like a megaproject or something similar.

Hell, one fort I had ended up being a repository of clownite weapons and armour for adventure mode. Another started as 'build a lava moat', turned into 'survive human sieges', flipped back, and then ended up as 'block out the sun' because I got sick of seeing vomit everywhere.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

It is totally intentional that dwarves are born with beards.  It's even mentioned as a footnote in the raws!

Roughly 98% of my actual playing is testing mods, so I rarely get time for proper RP.  Sometimes I'll play adventure mode though if I happen to find a particularly interesting situation where my actions can actually make a noticable impact on world events (for example, a nation at war).

Browsing legends is fun though, especially in massive crossover mods.
