Just to clarify, is it correct that research would not be applied immediately to anything, but could be used in the same round of designs and upgrades?

Also what kind of information do we get out of the prototype action.  Is it literally just you roll it but it doesn't actually count?

Otherwise, excited for the game.

The prototype action shows us the result of a design roll, we don't know how a design turns out until we either prototype it or buy it in the production phase.

Failbird is correct on what the prototype action does.

Research actions give you information on a topic and boosts to related rolls, making related projects easier. For instance, if I wanted to design an engine, it would be an easier roll if I took another action to research engines first. To do this, I would have to write how I want to research engines: basic experimental methodology that informs what info to give you.

I have updated the OP for rules clarification regarding the research phase. I will also be using d6 for rolls. This better fits systems I've ripped from other arms races.

Mate, the starting sets are all already chosen. We're on the fourth pre-battle designs by now or something like that.

Glass is, as usual, correct.
Yep, as ever, I bestow upon Glass the expected +1
I'm gonna say we go with whatever Glass's idea is.
