Hah, managed to buy the game thanks to a helpful neighbor.
Time to start failing horribly.

Started a new world. Started freezing to death immediately.

Started a new world. Actually found a few patches of crops, and even some prima terra. The first night, I dug a small shelter into the dirt and put my bed down. Apparently I didn't sleep long enough, because it was still dark when I woke up, and the drifters were spawning. After hastily trying to close up the entrance, I waited a bit for the sun to come up. Then I broke out and ran. I turned around and saw about a dozen of them.

The amount of time you sleep is based on the quality of your bed. The cheapo hay one is only 5.5 hours.

Been building out my place Fish Stone on the CoB server.

Can now get on top of the rock spire and build my house.  Gunna work on my barn and a cellar to store food first.

Also panned enough copper to make a hammer and pick axe.  Haven't processed the ores yet.

I swear, sometimes this game feels more like Unreal World than Minecraft. At least there aren't any bears. Wolves are bad enough. I keep hearing what sound like growls, only to find nothing when I look around. And then one spawns outside my house when I'm busy firing pottery. Lost a lot of peat because I died three times to that damn wolf before I killed it.

Unreal World meets Minecraft isn't a bad way to put this game, really.

Sans the hilarious real-life imagery accompanying the gameplay. Or did they get rid of that? I haven't played Unreal World in quite a long time.
I'm not mad, by the way; those silly photos gave me life.

They're still there, at least last time I played.

After painstackingly washing ore for two picks (just in case i waste them) and making them, i went to check out that marsh canyon north of Shooer's house. And got into a deep arse. Very deep arse. It was an arse so deep, i could never get out.  ::)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Technically speaking, it seems i could get out of there only by sarving to death. While reading in the wiki what i'm supposed to do with graciously lent copper pick. Great news - there is 25% density copper ore down there. I even seen one myself, although i was already so deep i couldn't see which block i'm mining.  :P To paraphrase greatorder, "I can't say this with enough hatred - fuck dirt physics"
EDIT: Just discovered that ladders require only sticks. Will probably try to rebuild Shooer's path up a mountain, apparently it goes only up a third now.

Rest of the sigs
The helicopter is rent apart by the collision, its steel unable to resist its inevitable reunion with the ground, and the meat within is smashed by the crumpling cockpit beyond any practical hope of recovery. What comes up, must come down again. Ore and ape, returned to mother planet's embrace.

Meanwhile, I've finally built an anvil and forge, and even made a copper saw.

Unfortunately, the layer stone of where I've settled is claystone, which doesn't have cassiterite, gold, silver, or bismuth, meaning no bronze. There are granite mountains not too far away, so it's not entirely hopeless.

Just discovered that in single player mode, you can browse the minimap while the game is paused.  Press Esc to pause, and you can use the mouse cursor to browse the minimap just like you can the M map screen, only that one doesn't pause the game.

The tedium of TFC always got to me about an hour in- Either that or I'm just enjoying video games less nowadays. Looks fun though.

I find Vintage Story much less tedious than TFC. Especially since you can easily config things to reduce a lot of the grind if you prefer.
