If you look at the website you could be forgiven for thinking the game is dying, but the Discord tells a different story. All the real action happens there. For example, this morning this was posted:

The official server was just wiped a day or two ago due to the new version having new worldgen (a rock strata generator and some other stuff). The game also has microblock chiseling, except it is turned off by default because one of the devs doesn't like it :/ You need to edit a file to turn it on.

But...it's not dead. They're still working on it and putting out updates.

And there are new posts from the devs on discord almost every day.

Any decent Let's Plays or reviews so far? The trailers look interesting enough but I'd like to get some impressions of actual gameplay from someone other than the devs, if that makes sense.

Sappho (Aira) has a whole let's play list of Vintage Story videos. Both older and newer versions. I expect she'll be adding some of the latest version sometime soon, once the bugs are worked out and it is stable.

EDIT: Looks like that just has the older videos. She has some newer ones from the Simpleton's Patron Multiplay server on her channel as well. You can find them under the general Uploads section.

So I decided to try playing this.

My world is infested with hyenas. It hasn't even been a day and I've died multiple times. By far the worst instance was when, while walking along the edge of a massive lake/ocean looking for reeds, I got caught between two hyenas that my spear was unable to fend off. I respawned, tried to make my way back there to collect my belongings, and got killed by another hyena before going 20 blocks.

This is (not) going well.

EDIT: I tried to rush back there, sprinting the whole way. The hyenas were guarding my stuff, I fell into a hole while trying to dodge them, and then they caught and ate me again. I'm giving this world up as a bad job.

Ouch, that's rough.

Note that the game is pretty easy to mod, so if you have too much trouble with Hyenas and Wolves you may want to try lowering their aggro distance a bit.

Is there a way to heal? I got bit by a hyena in this latest world, but survived by jumping into some water and smacking it with a rock (it ran away). Keeping my food meter full doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Yeah, only some foods heal IIRC. You need bandages or some such. I'm pretty sure you need reeds to make the basic version, so if you examine reeds in the in-game guide it should show them as a crafting option.

Yep, reeds and horsetail from the looks of it. Took three worlds before I found any reeds, I wonder how long it'll take me to find horsetail?

Luckily I found some redcurrant bushes, and those heal a tiny amount of HP each. I'm going to harvest some bushes and try to grow my own supply.

There was a bug in 1.9 that was making knapping crash the client in multiplayer, but a new version that fixes that was pushed this morning. Other than that little wrinkle, it seems the game is in a good place right now.

Lots of planned features are still missing, but on the other hand progress has been steady so it isn't just an empty wish list. Even better, what is there now is varied and quite solid.

I'm playing very little right now TBH, partly because I don't want to get burned out on it in early access. It always sucks to "play out" a game before it is done.
