Eventide University IC: The Fourth Awakening
« on: February 05, 2018, 05:11:34 pm »

The place: Eventide University. A large, brick structure initially built only a few months after the appearance of the Tears in order to house and educate the creatures that had begun appearing across the world. Since then, it has become a place of learning not just for Dimensional Beings, but for their children and anyone interested in the new world of magic that had seemingly appeared overnight. One would expect that such a school located in the generally-closeminded south of the United States would be frowned upon by the locals, but it had, perhaps wisely, been decided to build the school on the outskirts of the city of New Orleans, which had, as one can expect from the city’s history and culture, been quite welcoming to their new neighbors, to the point that many alumni in those early years had decided to stick around and build their lives there. As a result, not only has the city become one of the most magically-populated places on the planet, it had even stopped getting regularly levelled by hurricanes due to a sizable population of wind and water spirits helping to either break their backs while well out to sea or simply divert them away from the city itself.

Presently, several vehicles are pulling up the long drive to the university itself, within them several members of the newly- accepted class. Some local, some from far-flung climes, each with their own history, nature, and outlook that would no doubt shape the character of their education. All of them find themselves raising their eyes to the sky as the school appears on the horizon, or more specifically to the black clouds that hover over it, an angry red… thing in its center. This was another reason this school had been built here. A Tear, relatively benign compared to many others, and perfectly suited to research. Luckily for some of them, it threw the grounds into a perpetual, red-tinged twilight, the source of the school’s unusual name.

Soon, they would reach the school, their transportation finding its way to the front of the school and letting them out, all but one car, which would instead circle around to the back, the two… students? Prisoners? (To be honest, neither the ones transporting them or, likely, the girls themselves knew quite which they were, if not perhaps both) inside only let out once those escorting them were quite sure they were secure and ready in case the two tried anything. Ultimately, they’d all find themselves led inside, to a central auditorium, and from there to their seats. All these students would find themselves seated together, though the two who had been brought in under guard would be a few seats away, isolated, somewhat, from the rest.

It is quiet, for now. They’re supposed to be here for something of a welcoming speech, but that has yet to start, and would likely be some time coming, so for now, they have time to get to know each other, and consider what path their studies will take going forward...

Lilly was just glad to be out of the sun as they entered the school building, even though it was from the back, closing the fancy parasol she'd brought to keep it off her. Don't look nervous or guilty she told herself, look optimistic. The opportunities here are wonderful - friends, education... control... a lot of things. Things could be way worse! That thought process did not, of course, keep her from staying a tad close to the other girl, or from looking around the auditorium for her brother as she waited for the ceremony to begin.

To an outside observer, this internal turmoil wouldn't be obvious. The pretty, albeit quite pale young woman seemed almost unaware of her guard or being set apart from the others, excitedly looking around the surroundings. The only signs of nervousness would be occasionally rubbing the choker she wore. She turned to the one person nearby. "So... I don't think we talked in the car. Not a really good atmosphere in there for it. How're you feeling about things?" She's just a... vampire, Lilly. No reason to be afraid. Right.

Scarlet was on edge herself, showing it a bit more visibly. She wasn't the only one who'd come equipped with a parasol, though hers looked somewhat moth-eaten and was of an eye-achingly pink color. (It was the only thing she could find and afford.) "Uhh. . ." She scratched her head. How was she feeling? That was a little bit more complex to answer than you might think. "Still kind of taking things in," she answered after a moment. "It's, uh, been a while since I've been around people."

Dominicus had been quite enchanted by the trip. Everything was bigger and more interesting than back in Texas. And of course he'd never been that close to a rift before. The bloody twilight was kind of unnerving but he could adapt. The auditorium... was pretty disappointing honestly, not much different from the one at home. He was so caught up in his thoughts that Dom didn't notice he sat on the edge of the divider between him and the two parasol gals. Not wanting to be rude he waited for a break in their conversation to tip his hat.
"Howdy!"

Lilly starts moving a hand towards Scarlet's shoulder, but then drops it. Probably too familiar when they just met. Also maybe vampires didn't like being touched? She wasn't sure. "...Well, I guess I can see why that'd be weird. Don't worry, I'm sure things will be... just fine. Yeah!" she says, trying to force enthusiasm that just wasn't there into her voice. She lets the silence sit for a few moments, before continuing. "I, uh... don't think I've given you my name! I'm Lillian. You can just call me Lilly though." She rubbed the back of her head awkwardly. It was at about this point a boy from just at the edge of the boundary between the girls and the others broke in. "O-Oh, hi." Lilly stammers - confidence aside, this was the first person she'd talked to in a while that wasn't with the government or her family.

Berenice Pagtakhan was, truth be told, feeling nervous.

It felt like only last week she was leaving high school behind, celebrating the last time she'd ever step foot through those doors. It felt like only last week that her last university retracted her application at almost the last minute and they had to flurry about and find a place that'd take someone of her ancestry. It felt like only last week that she was touring this place, looking up the accommodations, asking questions and talking to a few people and wondering what it'd be like being in place with mostly supernatural people for a change instead of being the only supernatural in the neighbourhood, where they taught you magic alongside human anatomy, and where people talked about performing alchemy the same way kids would be talking about drinking Jagerbombs.

It was all changing quickly within so little time and anyone else might get rather quickly overwhelmed.

But Bernie was nothing if not adaptable.

She strolls in and sits at the edge of the row next to the guy talking to the weird parasol girls, hoping quietly she wasn't late yet.

At the cowboy-looking kid's gesture, Scarlet replied with a vague gesture that seemed to indicate tipping her own (nonexistent) hat in reply. She leaned forward a bit as Lilly finished her talking, so that he could hear her better when she spoke. "I'm Scarlet. It's, yeah, you don't have to say it out loud, I know." She grimaced slightly - an expression that exposed her fangs for the briefest moment. She gestured at the brown-haired guy again. "What about you?"

With zero hesitation Dom spoke with a smile.
"The name's Dominicus Helsing. Pleased to meet you miss Scarlet and miss Lilly!"
Dom is quiet for a few moments before his expression changes to be slightly panicked. He really wasn't intending to let the Helsing thing slip just yet. Woops.
"Uh... No relation to, you know, that one guy! It's just a bad coincidence."

Lilly blinked as the last name registers. "Helsing? Like the-" she couldn't exactly go pale but she looked a little afraid, hand going to the choker again. She was interrupted by his explanation, and visibly calmed. "Oh. Thank goodness. I was worried for a second..." she said with an awkward smile that flashed her teeth. She was quiet for a moment, looking at the boy. Huh. Uncovered neck- one of the guards coughed, and she looked at him. A sharp glare.

Oh, right. Lilly fumbled around in a pocket for several moments, before pulling out a small index card. "I'm uh... legally required to say this. Court order and all." she said apologetically. She... didn't seem happy about it at all, as she cleared her throat before reading off from the card. "My name is Lillian 'Lilly' Mycroft. I am required by court order to inform you, in case you have not made such an assumption from existing information, that I am of an undetermined vampiric strain and as such potentially dangerous and under several restrictions for your safety." she frowned as she finished. "...What the card doesn't say is that I've never drank from a person and really really don't want to! I-I'm not that dangerous, really." she added hurriedly, worried that she'd just driven away the first person (apart from Scarlet) to talk to her here.

Bernie quietly looks to her right, seeing the conversation going on next to her.

So one guy was, possibly, linked to those weirdoes that her parents warned her about (the kind of people who spent their time harassing supernaturals like themselves) and the other two (protected by a bunch of guards) were actually vampires. Or, well, at least one of them was.

She shifts nervously in her seat, hoping nobody notices.

"Huh." No relation, but was he still totally devoid of hostile intent? It would surprise her if the man really didn't have any distrust in his heart for her; she sure as hell wouldn't trust herself, given the situation. Probably good to just treat him with a fair amount of wariness, just like everyone else. She. . . probably wouldn't fight hard enough to kill someone if they tried to do such to her, but it's not as if she actually wanted to get staked.

Once Lilly finished her spiel, she sighed a bit before speaking up. "I should tell you the same thing she did. They didn't actually write it down, but I'll also let you know that my sire had strong hypnosis, so try not to, I dunno, stare too deep into my eyes or something when I want something from you. Not that I'd actually use it on anyone, but I probably wouldn't trust me if I were you, so." She spoke matter-of-factly about it, though she didn't reaffirm Lilly's statement of her lack of feeding on humans - she couldn't, not with certainty.

Her only reaction to the other girl's nervous fidgeting (clearly in response to their conversation) was a brief flick of her eyes downward. It wasn't unexpected, but that didn't mean she had to like it.

Alex sweated like a pig in the Southern heat.

Well, to be fair, he sweated in pretty much any heat at all. The raw life energy of the World Tree may pulse through his body, but little can strip away the natural inclination to cold that Maine breeds in its kin. As muggy as the summers could get, they were never as bad as this bug infested hell hole. At least, he thought this damn itching takes my mind off the mosquitoes and heat. He rather regretted his decision to sit near the center, as he found himself two empty rows behind one of the ladies with the parasols, the one with the choker to be exact. Normally this would not be a problem, but it seemed that the bits of living wood in his scars had decided that the young woman was going to be an Issue. The writhed and vibrated in his skin, just like they had when Uncle Albertus had brought in that Egyptian Mummy who claimed to be one of the original Hermetics.

Alex idly rubbed the tip of his staff, top worn smooth from countless bouts of fidgeting, and considered his options. The undead ladies were interesting, though he may need a bit more acclimatization time before he was ready to speak to them. The rather boisterous young man also had an air of importance about him, though both the hairs on the back of his neck raising and the man's conversation with the parasol duo cut off that line of approach. That left...Ah! The young blond haired woman a few chairs down from him! Alex scoots as quickly and subtly as his walking situation will allow and smiles at her.
"Ah, hello. Also a bit recalcitrant to speak to those around us? I understand, sometimes I get a bit tongue shy myself. I assume you're also an incoming freshman? Before I forget myself,
 Alexander Rand."
He smiles and holds out a hand for her to shake.

Bernie doesn't catch Scarlet spying her nervous fidgeting. Not that it was solely because of proximity of vampires (Bernie wasn't raised to dislike vampires, but her parents kept instilling it into her to be careful around them and being in a new place, with a ton of supernaturals AND strangers wasn't helping), but the presence of armed guards in the hall wasn't helpful. The armed guards were probably doing worse things for her nerves than the vampires were; the vampires were, at least, talking and trying to fit in with people, so at least they were trying to come off less scary than their reputation.

Which was more than either the guards or Bernie were doing.

And then some random guy had just come up to shake her hand. Bernie blinks, shaking her head, the talking snapping her out of her fugue. She brushes a stray hair from her eyes, musters a smile and nods back, shaking his hand.
"Oh, uh.....hi. I'm Bernie, nice to meet you too. Um, not really, just.....you know, new place, new people, kinda hard to get used to it all so quick, you know?"

"I uh... kind of guessed the vampire thing. I mean, the whole pale skin and parasols thing kind of tipped me off that either you two were way richer than me or vampires.... So where're y'all from anyways? I'm from Texas personally. Oh, and before I forget just call me Dom, only my dad calls me Dominicus."
Dom pats himself on the back for the smooth transition to a less uncomfortable topic.

Alex notes the clear hesitation on the girls part, but shrugs it off as first day anxiety and/or social awkwardness. Both of those were perfectly fair, if he hadn't grown up in a large, society family that held shit loads of parties he might not be so easy with meeting new people either. Instead he gives Bernie his best, most winning smile and shakes her hand. "Good to me you! I understand the anxiety, when I first went to high school I dealt with the same thing. Course be one of the few kids in a wheelchair might have heightened that, but I got over that particular disability. You decide on a major yet, or are you still undecided. Not to put too much pressure on you first thing! Feel free not to answer if you don't want to."
