Ocean voyages
« on: January 26, 2018, 07:57:29 am »

How far can a dwarf swim in the ocean, and what dangers await him?

Assume legendary swimming, no overloading as far as weight goes, and enough food and water to last a month.

Do you get tired, then exhausted, then drown? Can you cramp or get nausea and drown? Do they release the kraken after nightfall, or will you get eaten alive by sharks at midday?

What are the risks? How far have you swum?

No risks at all, and you can swim at normal speed endlessly.

Just make sure you're swimming in warm waters, or during summer. Water freezes abruptly in DF, and if you're swimming when that happens you die instantly.

Other than that the only real risk is sheer boredom, since you can't fast travel over oceans.

also walking on a frozen ocean will result in the same scenario only with the ocean jutting up walls then if you travel too deep you might end up encased in a wall of ice from the ice floor caving in spraying all the water into the air which re-freezes.

Yeah, I just lost a new adventurer while training in a river, which froze solid as I swam under a bridge when it got night.  Sucked big time, lost two hours of wandering thru hamlets collecting armor.   Was having issues with the water freezing solid in my bags, as well.  Can only imagine the frustration-rage of losing a bad-ass character to thirst because of that... I guess glacier trips are out for now?

The frozen ocean thing at least sounded impressive.  I am still greatly troubled that there are no kraken, or at the very least, great white shark attacks.  Ocean travel should be less safe and more like Gilgamesh.

On frozen water in waterskins, you can heat it by a campfire -- 'g' to build a campfire, then 'I' to interact with your waterskin (or just the ice inside). Snow can also be heated into drinkable water in this way.

Also, there actually are sea monsters and sea serpents, along with ordinary ocean predators like sharks, but the problem is the oceans are so vast you'll likely never see one.

Oceans will be expanded around the time when boats are added. About 20 years. Patience is a virtue! :P

You can also fill a bucket with Beer/Wine/Spirits and use that as your drinking fluid. Freezes way less often compared to water, and like any liquid, can be instantly replenished by emptying it on the ground, and instantly refilling the bucket up to full. Ntm fulfills a universal Need
