Vintage Story - I Can't Believe It's Not TerraFirmaCraft
« on: January 25, 2018, 07:21:07 pm »

Website
Discord

Someone over in the Minecraft thread mentioned this. I went and checked it out, realized exactly how similar to TFC it was, and bought it. Crop rotation, knapping, more in-depth blacksmithing (though less annoying than TFC had). There's modding support, though there aren't really many mods yet. It's currently going for $9.

The devs like to watch people play so if you stream or otherwise record yourself, join the Discord or let me know.

Well I guess I'll just park a post here to keep an eye on this thread.

Seriously, does mojang just not care, or is there some weird issue involving swedish law that prevents them or Microsoft from even giving a cease and desist?

Yeah, while I really enjoyed TFC for a while, I'm kind of surprised some sort of legal action hasn't been taken against this game. Not that I wish it to happen, but I honestly couldn't tell the difference between this and TFC for MC

EDIT: Bought the game and joined the server, this game is actually quite different form MC & TFC now that I've been able to play it. It runs better, too. Would recommend if this type of game is something that interests you

I'm going to hold off on getting this one for now, but I do want to watch it.

Its incredible similarity to Minecraft would put me off. Is there enough difference to justify it being a separate game? The intro video shows some things, but they seem to be superficial changes.

Given the creator was a Minecraft modder who was tired of how shitty the modding experience was, I find the similarities understandable.

Seriously, find me one voxel survival game that doesn't look like Minecraft. Minecraft doesn't have a monopoly on the art style.

The similarities are certainly understandable.

However, if it wishes to go beyond 'mod' and into 'game' it needs to show a certain level of independent creation. I'm asking if that is present.

Given that it is based off of Terrafirmacraft and not Minecraft itself, I'd say the better question is what makes this better than TFC? (Terrafirmacraft being a mod that tries to make things like crafting and farming much more realistic).

I'll answer this question instead.

If you're just looking at current features (ignoring performance and the fact that you can't play TFC on a version above 1.7.10), it's not better. It's basically TFC at the moment. Assuming the speed of development continues, it will quickly become something more.

In which case, my monies will be held in reserve until such a time as they prove to be worthy of individual purchase. Still, may as well wait and see.

This is far from the first game to be ridiculously similar to Minecraft in graphical appearance and mechanics. If Mojang did start taking legal action against copycats, it would be decades before he got to this one.

You want a difference from Minecraft? Look at the system requirements. If they are accurate this thing should run much better than MC does.

My big questions is if this will be as annoying as TFC was last time I tried it. TFC had some really cool features, but several little things made it a touch too hard at times, for example trying to find certain ores was hard to the point of insanity unless you really liked to travel...

I love the terrain generation. Sea caves in the site's media section, stone towers and actual overhanging cliffs (scroll down) on the forums. Temperate Uluru in my own save.
