Adventure Mode is Unplayable for me (LAG)
« on: January 23, 2018, 06:48:19 pm »

So I play a lot of fortress mode, and my laptop is pretty ok, I usually dont notice a big FPS slowdown before FUN! happens to me anyhow...   And recently I thought why havent I ever tried adventure mode???

Well, I created a small world with a 125 yr history and the moment I start moving around (dwarf in a fortress) the game is SO lagged I can barely stand it.  I mean, it is unbearable to even cross a room, let alone explore the fort, let alone pick thru those god-awful "lets dump everything on the floor in THIS room but nowhere else" rooms.

What am I doing wrong??  I heard you can turn off temperature and weather? HOW?  And if I turn off temperature, does dragon fire get neutered? (that sucks)

In adventure mode sadly most of the time those convulated dwarves fortresses can be unplayable laggy indeed, similarly to how some gob dark fortress and overall sites are.
Sometime they're playable though i had some that for some reason didn't destroyed performance, but most often they're not, and staying away from them is the best way to enjoy the game.
Why exactly , probably a combination of bugs , bad AI pathfinding spam or in-fight that for some reason destroy performance.

I suggest if you want to play as a dwarf adventurer to have one starting in a hillock or hamlet instead of a dwarf fortress.

I usually teleport away from forts using gm-editor anyways. Nobody likes to putz around in a fortress for hours, especially with lag.

Oh ok so it's just the fort?  I just wanted to find some armor and lure a few soldiers into the bushes, so I guess I will put up with it for now.

Thanks, guys.

Human towns are better-equipped anyways.

Yeah but I'm a dwarf (CUZ DWARF FORTRESS) and I was of the understanding that dwarves couldnt wear human armor?

Anyhow, its a moot point.  I found out that I was over-loading myself (didnt realize gems were so heavy) and the lag was mostly just a move speed of 0.282 + crawling.  Fun.

And that's a moot point too, because I found a road and got attacked by a giant cave spider.  I was doing ok, but didnt realize how to use my axe and was just punching its fat for a few rounds.  Then it webbed me and is shaking me by my head and pulling my head off slowly, so Im pretty much boned.  I dropped my axe and shield in the tumult, and now when I take my second axe out of my pack, it only lets me "haul" it instead of holding it normally?

Life comes at you fast.

In adv mode, I only play humans because of their size.

Any advice on how to wield my axe?  It says it's in my hands (hauled) and if I push q I am told I dont have anything to wield.  There are no weapon options in the Attack menu.

Press r and select the axe. Or drop it, pick it up, then press r on it.

Ive dropped them, picked them up (they go straight into my pack again), removed them from my pack (they go straight back to being 'hauled' again), dropped them again...

I got free of the webs but it is still on top of me.  RAAAAAAAAAAAAAPE!!!!

You can't hold anything because either you're paralyzed or your hands are busted or both. Just start over in a human town, you'll have a much better time.
And don't pick fights with GCS or any other web spinners, there's no counter to webs so they're more dangerous than most megabeasts.

Yeah I didn't mean to, tried to run from it as well..

I've tried human now too. Every single time, I start in the middle of a goblin invasion or war or something. Is that normal?  Last time, I went around killing all the wounded goblins with an iron spear. Was doing good until I stumbled into the goblin leader wielding a 2handed iron sword. Thought I was going to win at first when I tore an artery in his right hand with nerve damage, but he didn't seem to have any trouble with his 2handed weapon for it and eventually disembowelled me.

:(

Also I tried once to train swimming and promptly drowned.

It's not usual. But it depends on the world of course. Yours has lots of human-goblin conflict going on. Most would regard that as a lucky start (as opposed to lost in a fortress or days away from anything interesting besides bogeymen).

You should find out more about your world before you start, then you'll know what's going on with the invasions.

I had a Fun start in an Elf camp once. It was being attacked by a winged night troll. Ex-princess of the civ. Vicious thing. Killed me and impaled me on a bamboo stake (was still staked there for my next adventurer to find).

well no counter outside of playing one of their siblings the spider-folk but even so your kinda at disadvantage with not being able to swim if you play them no matter how many skill points you put into swimming.
