Game suddenly gets low FPS
« on: March 01, 2008, 08:03:00 pm »

I don't know what I did, I tried changing .ini settings, freeing ram, changing processor priority. I'm trying slaughter more pets, but nothing seems to work. Something in the game made the FPS drop to the single digits for some reason and I cannot find out why. I disabled weather, cave-ins, the music, re-enabled the weather since it wouldn't stop raining, disabled weather again. I changed the MAX FPS level. I cannot find what is causing the drop to an FPS of 5. My processor is a AMD Turion 64 Mobil Edition, 1.8 Ghz. It has a Radeon Express 200 Mobility, latest drivers, with performance settings for OpenGL set. I have 1 gig of RAM but 126 is taken up by the video card. I am absolutely lost as to what has caused this significantly lower FPS. The save file is a 25 MB 7zip file, I uploaded it here.

Have you lowered the GFPS to about 10? That CONSIDERABLY helps me. Like 20 FPS.

I lowered it to 50, I saw no change.

You lowered it to fifty? No, I mean the G FPS cap. The G was not a typo. It is in the init file, lower it to 10. Keep the FPS cap itself high, so the game can go as high as possible.

I thought that was only used if you used a graphical tileset.

Still no difference. Please just look at the save game. I'm stumped and all suggestions do not work.

No, it just lowers the amount of checks or something the program does every frame. Hmm...it won't help much, but turn off temperature too. Make sure all other programs are off, and all that. If you still have superlag, check the units list. If there was like a herd of 25 deer or something, that could have slowed you down. Is there a river in you location? Is your location large (embark area)? You may have to start using small fort areas without rivers, both of those slow down the frames.

Alright, I've looked at the save. I think it has something to do with either the large amount of water pathfinding, or the amount of dwarves. Sorry I couldn't help.

oh btw my first name is William and I also use 7z for compression. Just thought I'd share.
