Meat Markets, Wall Climbing, and Human Outcasts
« on: January 15, 2018, 03:52:06 pm »

2 questions here:

1) the climbing page on the wiki says that creatures with climbing can climb up a wall and around certain setups. Can a creature climb two z-levels or only one?

2) I embarked on a rainy, mostly warm area with reindeer to get my butchery going, but after several years, the reindeer pair have not produced any offspring. What could cause this? The yaks I bought off the dwarven caravan have been breeding well.

3) I have Rocs. A pair of them that have made quite a handful of Roclings. While they have skills, they are not intelligent and do not have CAN_LEARN. Does this mean it is ethical and allowable for my dwarves to eat butchered Rocs?

4) There was a petition for a lord consort (human) to live in my fortress. He is married to someone, but none of the civilizations have anyone who matches her name. She is not in my fort. How do I look her up?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

1. They can climb arbitrarily high, although even natural climbers can fall occasionally. A floor jutting out one tile or a floor plus a wall two tiles will block climbing. Smoothed natural rock is supposed to be impossible to climb, although I've seen a forum report of an undead that managed to climb out of a dry moat after some years of trying.

2. Homosexuality and asexuality is a thing among animals as well (as is bi sexuality). One or both might be dud for breeding purposes.

3. Sure. They're just very large turkeys...

4. I typically make a Legends Mode export, bring it up in Legends Viewer, locate the lord consort, and check his relations. That should give you a link to the spouse, so you could check her up. If you're culling unimportant historical figures dead spouses may not be available, but I'd guess a lord is important.
With DFHack:
- open-legends
- exportlegends info
- exit out of legends mode
- open the exported files with Legends Viewer
Without DFHack:
- Copy the save
- Retire or abandon the fortress in the copy and start it in Legends Mode
- Leave Legends Mode and discard the copy
- Export xml and parameters
- Open the exported files

1. Thank you for that info. I figured as much, but wanted to be sure.

2. Aha, gotcha.

3. I swore they were intelligent. Guess not!

4. Done and done. Turns out this dude is married to a lady of a hamlet. It appears to be 50 horses, 30 human outcasts, 11 dogs, 9 chickens, 8 humans and 7 turkeys. What are the human outcasts?

In regards to 2, if you're not using Dwarf Therapist (that handily shows sexual orientation), you can always type "gaydar" into DFHack to get the genders & orientations of every unit on the map.

Aha. My reindeer cow is asexual. Thank you for that note.

A Roc is a gigantic eagle. To get a breeding pair is so lucky; I envy you. They really are a giant turkey if you use them for meat but they make great fighters and I think also grow somewhat fast which is nice for both military and food.

I didn't know this one either. It is unfortunately too late. I butchered that reindeer and instead bought two other cows from human traders.

Yes, I know that, but I would not equate them to giant turkeys (which I realized are not actually a thing!), as they are significantly larger and much more dangerous.
