Barrels/Pots Stopped Working (Resolved)

For some reason, my meat stockpile & prepared meals stockpile have decided to stop accepting barrels/pots for storage. I've tried deleting & re-creating the stockpiles, to no avail. Same with removing the link to the Kitchen.

Has anyone encountered this before? How can this be fixed without going as drastic as retiring/coming out of retirement?

You can see below that I've designated x amount barrels for the 2 stockpiles circle in red, along with having sufficient empty barrels & pots in the stockpile circled blue. And even if I produce fresh barrel/pots, they just clutter the Workshops.

Did you acidentally forbid furniture hauling in the options menu? (o >> u)

Just checked, no.

I also swept all the layers of my base with "claim" just in case they were stuck on a random barrel/pot.

I have seen the same strange happening in my fort. Barrels just pile up at the brewery never to be hauled to the stockpile and the guys keep coming down with their muggs and drick directly in the brewery. Claiming, stopping all jobs and have them only haul food, general workshop orders (dwarfs gather food), everything should work.

There is one thing, where if you set a stockpile to take from a workshop (in this case, have a booze stockpile set to take from the still), it turns the workshop into a 'give to link only' workshop. I had to make my empty bag stockpile take from my dyers to retrieve the empty bags, and my seed stockpiles as well, because even though they were not taking empty bags from the workshop, they were still using them to store seeds in.

That still wouldn't explain why in your case they are also not taking barrels from the blue circled stockpile, unless the barrels stuck in the still are already reserved for the spots in the accepting stockpile.

EDIT: tl;dr: try making your food stockpile take from the still, see what happens. If it works, it probably also needs an order to take from your workshops producing pots / barrels as well, for they might be give to ink only as well.

Nevermind all! I found the problem! And blimey, it's a weird one :o Maybe this post'll help others if this happens to them. Regardless, thanks Martinuzz & Novaris for helping put ideas forward though, much appreciated!

Essentially, I had noticed for a long time now that in my creatures screen, I had 3 tamed vermin that I most certainly did not buy or catch. I couldn't even locate them at the time (forgot how to until just now), which was the stem of my epiphany.

I started to go through my Enhanced Stock of barrels, and found at bottom, there was a collection of barrels marked in red, similar to the following image for anvils:



However, when I zoomed to the location, it just pulled me to a unique random edge of the map each time I tried. Clearly, it was not on the map, but still registered as part of my colony. As a result, when it came to the barrels, I assumed that my dwarrows were all path-finding to barrels that were well & truly unobtainable. So, I marked the red barrels for dumping, DFHack autodumped them as there was obviously no direct path, and then checked the stocks screen. They were all still red, & glitchy. Consequently, I atom smashed them, and the problem was fixed.

Now I'm going to have through every single stock item (as these red objects are littered across them) and autodump everything this random caravan (years & years ago, denoted by the pet vermin's age in my stock) glitched out of my game.

Edit: From the wiki, Red means: "Not owned by fort (uncollected webs, and trade goods and equipment currently owned by traders or invaders)". 2.5k cave spider silk was red (caverns...) but I still atom smashed them.. let that be a lesson to red stocks!

If you can forbid them, that's sufficient. Atom smashing them for good measure is understandable though.

Hm, with that finding I went along and checked the records of my bookkeeper and sure enough I have all weird crap scattered around the map edge, like if trade caravans just dumped it right before entering the first tile of the map or invaders brought the stuff with them to lure my dwarfs out. Maybe thats also the reason for my FPS impact.

Yeah; I just cleared 2k items though doing it, so good stuff :)

Hm, with that finding I went along and checked the records of my bookkeeper and sure enough I have all weird crap scattered around the map edge, like if trade caravans just dumped it right before entering the first tile of the map or invaders brought the stuff with them to lure my dwarfs out. Maybe thats also the reason for my FPS impact.

I'm convinced it's when they leave, as I had to destroy all of the clothing I had sold to them prior >:( hopefully it's not a regular thing.. mm

So definitly a caravan "bypassing my site" and just throwing stuff over the fence but also, based on the direction the stuff is to be found, invaders that died upon arrival

also, nearly everything is enclosed in () so was created off-site

AND IT WORKED, my dwarves again haul barrels into the stockpile! You Sir, are my hero! :D

It's most likely a merchant got scared by wildlife or half a goblin tooth, scuttled the goods, and fled. It's more of an issue when it happens on their way to your site.

The reason their stuff is marked in red is because it's marked as being owned by merchants. You'd need to use DFHack to clear that flag.

This is just a bug without cause. I have zero wildlife on my surface (too many caged critters), & I can see it's starting to pile up again (only a handful of items so far). I'll pay a visit to Mantis..
