Owned clothing blocking door
« on: January 14, 2018, 08:49:04 pm »

A farmer installing a door decided to take off his clothes after done installing it, which blocked the doorway from closing. Is there a way for me to move the clothes without installing external tools?

Dump it.

i -> create 1x1 tile elsewhere, d to designated dumping ground.
Then select the clothing and press d to designate it for dumping.

Did you know you can get rid of ownership on clothes without using 3d party tools?
The only requirement is that the clothing (or craft) item is not currently being actually worn by the dwarf.

Step 1) forbid the item
Step 2) wait a dwarfweek or two
Step 3) Lo and behold, ownership gone

Works on items stored in coffers / cabinets too.
Ofcourse the moment you unforbid items, they become re-available for claiming by your dwarves.
XXitemsXX will no longer be reclaimed, they will be moved to your refuse pile.

I organize regular 'hand-me-down' days in my fort, forbidding all items in dwarf rooms, and then having them reclaimed. Note that I don't give a wooden nickel about my dwarves' thoughts on their state of being dressed / degraded clothing. I tend to only make socks and cloaks, and let my dwarves go barefoot / bareheaded until they get armor. Tought luck for my miners and woodcutters, they'll have to go barefoot for eternity.

Ofcourse if this is too much hassle for you, DFHack has the 'cleanowned scattered' command which will basically do the same, without the 2 week wait.

Done that, don't work.

If the clothing wasn't forbidden but the dwarf didn't pick it up would the same thing happen?
Also is there a way to do cleanowned without wiping ownership of every piece of stored clothing?

1) Nope, unforbidden owned clothing will not lose ownership. It needs forbidding and some time.
2) Not sure, but I suspect cleanowned without added argument will only remove ownership for the item you are loo(k)in at

"cleanowned scattered x" will remove ownership for all dropped clothing that is worn at least down to "x" level, while "X" affects only that worn down to "X" level, and so on.

The dwarf cleaned up his mess and I closed and locked the door.

Thanks for the responses though!
