Turn 3

It is day in Sednelar and Northstop and night in Carklock and Vilyrian.

With everything ready, Cavefriend moves on with his Grand Plan to share the riches of the Deeper Earth with the denizens on the surface!

Biome Shard (Shallow Vilyrian)
-With all its power it's capable of, carve a channel from the deeper underground to a chasm on Vilyrian, however many actions it takes.
-If it has any power left, try to connect some shallow caverns to the surface.

Continental Shard (Vilyrian Underground)
-Transform a portion of the already highly mineralized earth underneath said channel into nearly pure metals and precious elements.
-Superheat the purified earth, and cause the liquefied earth to erupt through the channel! Let the surface have a new source of nearly pure metal ores to work with!

Universal Shard
-That done, Cavefriend splits off another of his Aspects, his Primary Aspect this time, the one of Deeper Earth, and creates a Memetic Shard of Metal!

Actions… (Earth) and (Earth|Mud) on the Biome Shard, (Earth|Mineral) and (Fire|Magma) on Continental, (General) on Universal. I’ve decided that I’m in fact perfectly fine with less than 2 aspects on an action.

After bonuses:

[3] - Partial Success
[7] - Gone Horribly Right
[5] - Epic Success
[3] - Partial Success
[3] - Partial Success

...oh this should be fun.

A thin crack from the deeper underground to the surface has been formed. Cavefriend also manages to convert the entirety of the surface into shallow caves, with the entire surface of Vilyrian now a spongelike mass of interlocking caves.
The earth under the channel is filled with precious metals, valuable ores, and majestic crystals! This earth then proceeds to melt, but not superheat. Vilyrian is left a tangled mess of caves with a vast sea of lava underneath it, with metals extractable from the lava.

Civilization naturally takes a hit after this and the mortals beseech Kseowhat for aid.

Cavefriend dedicates a memetic shard to the idea of metalworking.

A clarification about Quandaries. The point of a Quandary is to disrupt the standard decision making process. The standard decision making process of an individual is thus:

  • The individual lists the choices possible
  • The individual finds the results of each choice
  • The individual selects a desirable result
  • The individual carries out the corresponding action

Disruption of ANY ONE of these to a significant degree will award the Quandary to you. That is, in order to “unlock” a Quandary, you have to do AT LEAST one of the following:

  • Make it impossible to list choices, by ensuring that there are either more or less choices than the individual believes. The former is possible by forcing the individual into a false dichotomy where there could be ways to take a third option but they are hidden. The latter is possible by creating a false choice that the individual considers but is not actually possible. Note that perception and details matter here. For a false dichotomy, there has to be a legitimate way to take a third option which the individual could use if it knew. For a false choice, on the other hand, there cannot be any actual way to carry out the choice but the individual’s judgement must be influenced by the false choice. The most obvious way to influence someone with a false choice is to have them take it (and find out at their cost that it’s false) but the presence of additional options may influence evaluations in subtler ways.
  • Make it impossible to determine the results of choices by making such determinations inconclusive or incorrect. The former may sound easy, as nobody can predict the future, but as before, perceptions matter. To satisfy this condition, the individual must be convinced that it has no power whatsoever to determine what the results of an action is; that any prediction it makes is instantly questionable. This is done by setting things up so that, in Kafkaesque manner, actions have no predictable consequences around the individual in question. The latter is achieved by allowing the individual to predict the results of its actions in a way that is incorrect. This is one of the ways that you can win a Quandary after the decision has been made; by intercepting or interdicting the action so that it leads to an undesired result. Again, details matter. You cannot simply create an undesired result - that would go down as the decision-making process working but failing under outside influences. There has to be some logical reason why the result of the action would change, some system of rules used to intercept the intent.
  • Prevent the individual from selecting a favorable outcome. Simplest way to win and the one that I envision you using the most often. Create a lose-lose situation. Please note that it’s not enough to make every action bad or every action equal - you must make everything equally bad. Making everything bad but not equal will result in the selection of the best of a bad situation, which is still considered “favorable,” while making everything equal but not bad will be a win-win situation, a selection among benefits.
  • Prevent the individual from acting upon the choice. As before, this may sound easy, but perceptions matter. Throughout the decision making process, the individual must believe that it has influence over the decision. Now, this belief may be incorrect, which is winning by making it the entire thing a moot point. If you would like to bar the individual from action, however, such barring must take place in the time between the individual deciding upon a course of action and completing this course. Depending on the particular Quandary this could be anywhere from nanoseconds to weeks.

If at any point in the Quandary the individual becomes convinced that it has no reason to decide anymore then the Quandary evaporates and will regenerate instantaneously at a random location. If the individual tied to the Quandary dies then the Quandary regenerates somewhat less quickly at a somewhat less random location - the new Quandary will be related to the old, possibly regarding similar subjects, possibly as a consequence. Thus if you mess up good enough, simply shooting the individual may be a good idea.

Quandaries are assigned a definite decision as well as a definite individual. The way that the decision would go without your influence will also be determined. All these points of data can be determined by solving the ciphers I sometimes post.

To ease discussion, here is a list of all means to win a Quandary:

  • False Dichotomy: “I thought these were the only ways but they aren’t!”
  • False Choice: “I thought this could work but it doesn’t!”
  • Kafka: “I have no idea what I’ll affect and in what way.”
  • Irony: “This did something different than what I expected.”
  • Morton’s Fork: “There is no good choice.”
  • Moot Point: “There was never anything I could have done about it.”
  • Hands Tied: “Now that I’ve come to a decision, I can’t do anything about it!”

"More frustration with these gods and the incompetence of Kesowhat has left me with no choice."

Enact a world wide war, where the memetic shard is sitting at, driven by the betrayal of Kesowhat who has not done enough to prevent these events with all his power. All the while find potential recruits and followers for Tachyon and gaining valuable records of the inventions of war. This all begins during his announcement of the challenge as the fury buried inside each individual for the betrayal of Kesowhat's lack of divine protection has left many dead and suffering.

"LISTEN MORTALS! I offer all to those who listen and hear my voice! Those of you who follow Kesowhat has left a portion of your home in ruin. While I am certainly partially at fault, for being one of the gods who rule this realm, to allow these chaotic events take place; I am offering a chance of a lifetime. I am granting anyone who seeks my favor, who will listen instead of sending worthless emergency parties, in exchange to slay a giant that has spawned on the surface of your world. I do not care what method will be used to slay the beast but the reward will extend to all who 'help' slay this walking terror on your land. Kesowhat and his power should have removed these problems from the beginning but of course this is how he uses it: to let the rest of you suffer."

This offer also extends to Kesowhat's ever so loyal subjects, on one condition: deny HIM as your god. He has betrayed you and has let great suffering befall your land.

All of this shall become the war over the betrayal of Kesowhat. He has allowed your world to become what it is today; rise up and take control of this world from a sloth of a god and protect what is your home, even if you rip each other to shreds doing it! Of course, in the end, the choice is yours."

Takes some time to visit a random location in Seldenar. Maybe find some scorpion kin to become loyal to his cause. On the way attempts to convert a special place into something more special and useful.

Worry not, I am acutely aware that I have not updated this in literally months.

Turn 3

It is day in Sednelar and Northstop and night in Carklock and Vilyrian.

Create a continental shard in Datum, again

[2] - Failure

Wonk wonk wonk…

Turn the burrier against the cicadas.

In the absence of any method I’ll just assume you mess with his mind. You have only a Universal shard, which can only form a Shard this turn! I’ll just assume you whisper at him to bury the ship.

BURIER: “Hm! Perhaps that will be a good thing to BURY!

The great Titan of Death raises his shovel above his head and whacks the Cicadian ship a new one. The side of the huge shovel smashes into the ship, ripping off one of its wings and drive nacelles. Explosions chain through the rear segment of the ship, and machinery and people are blown screaming out to vacuum!

After a long period of self-searching, Grall rediscovers himself in a thrilling horseception the world has never before seen and likely never will again. There was fire, there were horses, there were tiny horses climbing over, out and inside other, bigger horses, there were half-horse half-horse abominations spewing fire everywhere while everything was on fire. There was more, but Grall forgot. He forgets things now, because he knows the importance of having no idea what is or had happened in his presence at any given time. Which is why he'll be tagging along with someone who probably knows what's happening. Kisar-Winding-Path, his best and only priest in this world. He will do so by desceding in the form of an above-average-sized two-handed four-pincered crimson Aissh with a long beard-shaped formation of detachable scales descending from his face that should double as a shield.
"Now. We scuttle! To save your sister from a grisly fate! Also, would you mind explaining what went on for the past, umm, ever since I last contacted you? That'd be nice."

Going to ask for more confirmation that you want to Descend, cause a Continental shard is a pretty big thing to lose and you can communicate with your worshippers just fine as-is.

Kisar: (shaping a piece of crystal glass) “My awareness of the hypocritical injustices conducted in the name of law continue, lord of Arson… every day is filled with more and more atrocities caused by the servants of Kseowhat. But the rest of my people remain willfully blind to this. Who should I attempt to convert first?

  • My friend, Teman-ArisingWays. He has recently dropped hints of questioning Kseowhat, but is unlikely to be of much influence in the wider world.
  • My sister, Mirian-WindingPath. She has no love for her husband-to-be but feels constrained to it by the laws of Kseowhat.
  • My potential brother-in-law, Carlos-YawningBridges. It’s obvious he’s smitten with my sister, and doesn’t have very much respect for Kseowhat’s law.
  • The local preacher of Kseowhat, Eurid-FordingMountain. Though dedicated to Kseowhat, he clearly cares about the people and refuses to have his help hindered by red tape.
  • The son of the preacher, Lancey-FordingMountain. He rebels against Kseowhat… but also everything, he’s just edgy.

lets cause the builders who are rebuilding get pyromania and start destroying their hard work

This AGAIN? Fine. That’s Fire|Ash.

[5] - Epic Success

A man looks out at the destruction wrecked by the two disasters of fire and ash.

Along the streets of the cities of Carklock stand burnt trees, stripped of their foliage, blackened limbs jutting out like stunted arms. Houses are blackened and collapsed, cracked like eggshells.

He turns to the ship of Kseowhat. One of the mighty Temple-Craft stationed around the third moon of the planet, it stands shining with blue metal, a stark contrast to the bleak darkness of the dust around it. Men are unloading crates marked with the seal of the god of law, rations to help Carklock on its road to recovery.

Burn it.

The man wonders what the voice was.

Burn it all.

But that’s such a strange thing to think. Kseowhat has been only helpful-

Burn the ship. Burn the rations. Burn it all.

Why would he-

You have a welding torch. Set it to full power. You know where it’s flammable. Burn it all.

The man wondered if it was his own subconscious or something more sinister. He wondered if he was turning insane.

Trust me. Burn them all.

“Hey,” said the other worker, rolling a large green barrel down from the ship. “Quit staring into space. We gotta help these people. This fuel isn’t going to burn itself.”

Burn.

“I’m sorry, did I say burn?” the other man said. “I meant move.”

He meant burn.

“I’m really not sure why I just said that, ha ha.”

Blue switch on. Safety off.

“But the green ones are gasoline. Those will explode the best.”

The man clicks off the safety on his welding torch. Kseowhat has knowledge of electricity and metallurgy, and was perfectly happy to let the Raedan Kingdom borrow some of it.

Pull the trigger!

“Why?”

Pull the trigger. All you have to do is move your finger.

“What are you doing?” asks the other man.

You know what you're doing says the voice. A vision of flames and fire, smoke and ash, ripples through the man's mind.

The man’s finger moves twitching to the trigger of the torch.

“What do you think you’re doing?” the other man asks again, before unscrewing the cap of one of the gas tanks and saying, “It won’t combust without air.”

Pull it! Burn! Burn!

“Hey…” says the man, voice shaking. He turns to his coworker. “Do you hear voices inside your head?”

The other man looks confused. “Voices?”

“Because-”

BURN!

“Because you’ve been acting strange, and I…”

“Voices?” asks the other man again. “Telling you to-”

BURN! BURN IT ALL!

The other man looks quizzically at the first one.

Realization dawns upon his face.

“Wait,” he says. “Wait, who is talking to-”

The man’s finger twitches.

Electricity and heat surge down the length of the welding torch. The gasoline in the air ignites, and then they don’t really care anymore, do they.

The pressure of memetic influence reaches its peak. Thousands of fingers twitch as one.

Red balls of fire explode all over Carklock. Buildings, wagons, stores of food… even a Temple-Ship is destroyed as blasts chain through it. Crimson flowers of blazing light rise into the air and unfold in unison, almost hypnotically.

Then the burning begins.

-d20 to “Rebuild Carklock” for next two turns. Clause added: If “Rebuild Carklock” reaches zero, an enthalpy is gained.

Make an artifact following the specifications of my agreement with the scum, including the disappearance if Varalin is not returned, to me, unharmed in 48 hours, and the added specification that it can not read my thoughts.

You only have the Universal shard, which can only create shards this turn. Should have sharded earlier…

Because some things have gone on on the Discord, I’ll summarize here: Kseowhat descended Varalin. A group of mortals known as the Scum claim they’ve captured her and demand payment for her safe return to the godly plane.

"More frustration with these gods and the incompetence of Kesowhat has left me with no choice."

<snippy snip>

<ranty rant>

Going to assume that you’re going to use your memetic shard to broadcast this. Talking is a free action, anyway.

Tachyon pours substantial effort into broadcasting a message to every being that knows what war is - which, despite (or because of?) Kseowhat’s efforts, is still a lot.

He denounces Kseowhat and calls upon the people to reject him as well as challenging everyone to come forth and destroy the Burier to win his favor.

And the people listen.

The people stop literally midstep, in fact, gazing up at the sky as they listen to the mysterious voice with its promises of glory. Even the bloody battles on the streets of Carklock pause for a second.

Before beginning again, of course, with renewed vigour.

The Industrialist rebels of Carklock vow allegiance to Tachyon, being more open-minded sort, while the nobility stays staunchly by the side of Kseowhat. The other peoples of the world also react, and small rebellions against Kseowhat erupt on all inhabited continents.

And almost as an afterthought? Kseowhat torpedoes the Burier. He goes down in a few seconds.

New War system

So because we’re going into a world war now, and I’ve found my previous attempts at simulating mortal conflict too unwieldy, I’m using a system that prioritizes specific interactions and conflicts over abstracted units or power.

At the beginning of every turn, a few War Foci will spawn and be announced to all gods. These are points over which the sides conflict that are important to the overall outcome of the war - major battles, critical resources, strategic positions. Each comes with a list of possible outcomes. At the end of each turn, an outcome is chosen at random for each of them.

The interference of gods and other parties can only add outcomes, not remove them. For example, sending troops to save the day adds a possible outcome “Foreign troops save the day” but doesn’t change the existing options. Thus there is a bit of diminishing returns as the chance of the opponent winning is always there.

The balance of victories to losses on Foci decides the war. A side wins when it wins all the Foci on a particular turn and a majority of them on either the next turn or the previous one. So win majority, then all, or win all, then majority. It has to be MAJORITY, not tie, so if there’s only two then that means perfect twice in a row. You gain a point of Enthalpy every time someone wins all the Foci on a day to represent changing dominance in war and individual results may also include percent chances of earning Enthalpy. You may wish to draw out the war further in order to extract more enthalpy.

Foci won’t drop this turn, I’ll make a few next turn.

Results of this evaluation:

-1 Cicadian ship
+1 decision for Grall
-d20 to Rebuild Carklock
+1 potential enthalpy
+1 revealed dealing with the Scum
+1 world war
-1 Burier

War system still under construction.

!!!DANGER!!!
