How to protect those stupid weak monster slayers
« on: January 10, 2018, 11:32:17 pm »

in the ver 44.03, monster slayers and mercenaries are back. that's satisfying but, they are just as weak as before.

I just run a young fortress and don't have too many resources to clear the caverns.

so monster slayers just keep dying.

I don't mind offering them free food and drinks. I don't even mind them dying in the caverns.

well I do mind I have to build coffer for them. and overall, my dwarves will be exposed to the dangers when attempting picking up their equipments and their bodies.

I have lost a legendary carpenter. dear.

is there anyway to protect these sissies
or in which condition will they transfer to mercenaries quickly (just before become another cold body in the caverns) ?

Create a lever to flood the cavern entrance with magma every time one of them tries going in. Cruel, but works.

Most of my monster slayers are awesome. A lot of my mercs are too. But I play in highly populated worlds, so most are hist figs with long backgrounds of death and destruction.

Don't see the problem though. Mercs can just be trained in a squad, that's easy enough. Monster slayers will have to make do with practical experience. Don't worry, they enjoy it, just like adventurers. The more crundles they kill, the stronger they'll become.

I find having a large bunch of hunters rushing around the caverns helps everyone's survival rate too (except the hunters themselves, but there's plenty of them around).

Or that. I usually leave my hunters to do whatever.

But what if the plenty of hunters died in cavern and the dwarves have to haul their dead bodies exposing to dangers? if not buried properly, they will become undead ghosts.

Assign more hunters! They're not all going to die at once, hunters haul other hunter's bodies.

And you can use slabs to put those whose body you can't/won't recover to rest.

That's right, but It is just so easy for me to forgot check them situation , forbidding those bodies and equipments after they died.

There is an option in the options >> Forbid menu that allows you to auto-forbid all death items on both hostiles and friendlies. That way, you only need to unforbid stuff you want, at your own leisure, instead of forgetting to forbid things and ending up with cancellation spam, or dead dwarves.
o>>F >> forbid your dead, forbid your death items, and forbid other non-hunted death items is what you are looking for.

Will hunters haul  forbidden bodies?
The corpse of a hunted creature will not be forbidden by the 'F'orbid options, so the hunter will "Return Kill" after a successful hunt. But dismembered limbs resulting from the hunt will be forbidden.

Thanks for replying! Can I ask a further question? Will hunters haul other corpses which is not killed by them, say another hunter's body (if unforbidden)?

Non kill non sapient corpses are hauled with the refuse hauler labor (to the refuse stockpile, where the butcher shop will pick them up). I'm not sure whether corpses of sapient creatures are hauled with refuse hauler or burial hauling, but they now all end up in the corpse stockpile, not the refuse one.
Thus, a hunter will haul corpses it hasn't killed itself only if the appropriate labor(s) are enabled (and hunting isn't more "important").
