cant chop down trees
« on: January 08, 2018, 02:44:17 pm »

so my current fort is on top of a mountain, it only has a small selection of trees. and for some reason i cant chop those down?

it doesnt highlight them when i try designate them for chopping..some of the trees DID get highlighted and chopped..but now my industry is dead until i either find something to make coke from, or until new trees grow and hope they dont glitch out like this or whatever...

Hi I am new to the game too and had exactly the same problem just yesterday. After searching in dwarf wiki I found the reason. When selecting a series of trees at the same time to chop down, make sure the foot of the trees is on the same level. I had to ‘un’-designate some trees an ‘re’-designate them on the bottom level of the trees

CivBesch is correct. If your map (or cavern) covers multiple Z levels and you want to clear cut it, you can go to the highest level of ground on your embark, select everything for cutting from one corner of the map to the opposite corner, go down one level, repeat (starting with the corner you ended at on the previous level) until you've gotten to the lowest level with trees. Designating a tree in a different place replaces the previous designation, so stepping downwards like that will get them all at the ground level.

Thus, you don't actually need to de-designate your previous designation to get the trees cut further down.
