Problems Scrolling.
« on: January 06, 2018, 12:01:05 pm »

It seems that whenever I try to scroll past a certain point the game acts as if I've hit an invisible edge. This is quite irritating due to the fact that I can't go farther into a mountain to dig out a fortress, look at the environment beyond that point, etc. It's very similar to this issue: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=45632.0. I have no idea if this is a bug or an indicator I have actually reached the end of the map, and if it's the latter I'd like to know if there's a way to keep going to solve those issues. If this is a bug I've also posted this issue here: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=10504 just to be safe.

Do you have any pictures of this happening? It's kind of hard to understand what the problem you're experiencing is (the link doesn't help, dwarf fortress has changed tremendously since 2009).

You scroll until you hit the edge of the map, right? But you think the edge of the map should be further away? And you now can't access parts of the fortess you've previously built?

Have you tried loading your save in vanilla dwarf fortress? Does the same thing happen?

Yes I have pictures of this happening.

http://tinypic.com/r/2eati4g/9

And yes that's a good description of it though with the last part about not being able to access certain parts of the fort that hasn't happened to me since my first save which I accidentally deleted because me being such a newb I thought the retire fortress option was what got me back to the home screen. I have tried doing it in vanilla and the same thing happens

So you can see parts of the map near the edge, but you can't move the cursor into them? Is that it? You're not able to highlight plants or animals in these areas or designate areas there for building?

Maybe you're somehow seeing parts of the map you're not supposed to be able to see usually. There's some kind of twilight zone just off the edge where caravans dissapear sometimes. Dfhack can see them there (and deal with them) but usually we can't.

So before I answer any of those I would like to ask because I might be confused about how this works: When you mark a place to settle down and build your fort is that region the only place you can explore in that save? Like is there an edge that you can't go past and explore the rest of the world?

Yes, in fortress mode you are limited to the size of the embark you chose to go with. The world around it is still very much alive though. But, except for sending out raiding parties using the <c> screen, in fort mode you can't go there.

Okay I gotcha. So yes I can see part of the map off the edge I just can't go there or interact with it, it's like this in vanilla DF as well.

At the moment you can't change the size of your embark, this is correct. The amount of stuff you can do off-site though is increasing, hopefully soon we can order tunnels built.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

That's not the issue the issue is that I think it's making it so that I'm not able to scroll all the wag to the edge if my embark zone.

How many tiles "off the edge" can you not interact with.  The last tile on the side of the embark can not be built on (without trickery).  Also, once you get to the edge of the embark, the screen stops scrolling (although you should be able to put the cursor on an square --
with the possible exception of the last one... I can't remember if you can put the cursor there).

Looking at your screen shots, I can't understand what the problem is.  For one thing, I don't see the cursor in the main screen (only in the mini-map on the right).  How are you scrolling?

I can't build "off the edge" and I'm using my arrow keys to scroll. I think this whole issue is possibly just me not understanding how the game works.

You can actually count your way to knowledge of whether it works or not: Each embark tile is 48 in game tiles, so a 3*3 embark is 144 * 144 tiles. Use a cursor presenting command (e.g. 'k'), move the cursor to the top left corner, and count the number of tiles as you move the cursor with the arrow keys.

A comment on mikekchar's post is that you can build some things all the way to the edge, e.g. floors, paved roads, and bridges, while others (e.g. walls) cannot be built too close to the edge (5 or 10 tiles, I don't remember the exact number at the moment).

After using the designate tool going from the top left corner to the bottom right corner it says that the area is 192x192.

Thus, your embark is 4*4 (4 * 48 = 192), so there is nothing wrong (apart from a misconception on your part on how DF works).
I believe a withdrawal of the bug report is in order.
