dont forget custom beds when you have the required amount of rooms, but ecnomomy calls for better or worse ones. just fill in any openings made by avioding mining outside with oddly shaped rooms, engrave or smoothen them, and make little 1 tile bed closets for the horribly poor

the first one is a tesselation.

Another tesselation that pretty much establishes the pattern.

The yellow crosses are suggestions for connecting the tiles.
But the middles of these things could be used as staircases for anything from bedrooms to tombs.

definately much less efficient than most of these, but does give individual dwarves nice rooms.

The important part is the relative distance to the hauling jobs, ie stockpiles, imo. Meeting hall and the workshops are more important than bedroom designs.

That being said, I'm a complete sucker for symmetric, fractal-ish or slanted designs.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

My super low rent/barracks housing is simply a 22x5 room with beds along the walls and a row down the middle

I've been experimenting with more apartment style living, lately, not very space efficent or pretty like fractals but neat imho.

The big round mickey mouse-like blob is intened for noble rooms...or something.

For the close ups, these are for the commoner, legendary, did something minor of note caste

Key:
light blue and red are a reference for the direction of the lava/water because im stupid and cant remember on my own. darker blue/red are the lava and water pit.green is the door
brown/orangeish color are the beds and purple represents the chair and table or whatever else you wish to put in its place.
Yellow is for the stairs.

The left most image is kinda intended for legendaries, two per room. each with a char/table of their own. Upstairs (middle image) is for the common folk three per room or you can remove the chair/table to add more beds.  The far right image is for dwarves of note, they have a three room apartment to theirselves, complete with water and lava (for "cooking"), grates over the water/lava are option depending on how fond you are of these dwarves.

This is my noble rooms, it also doubles well for a farm plot, watering hole, storage room. My vague idea with this is to create an area seperate from the rest of the fortress by airlocks for all the nobles and an unlucky farmer to live, save for the dungeon master, and maybe the philosopher. Here they could live out their lives, and my legendaries would be safe from their wra-stupidity.

In my most recent fort, I build a 15-level green glass tower devoted to bedrooms only.  3x3 bedrooms for commoners, 4x4 rooms for administrators and nobility, 4x9 for higher nobility.

It got a little boring, actually, with all the floors identical.  I think it's pretty efficient, though.

One interesting thing about this design is that each door serves 2 rooms, or 3 rooms on the outer corners.

All your corridors are stairs?
Damn.

Yah.  It's a 29-level ring stairway.  I thought it might be better for efficiency.

Good luck when someone falls. The bottom of the tower will turn red of blood.

Still under construction as my population does not warrant it. This will basically be for peasants, military members, and other non-workshop related lower class ruffians. The 3x3 rooms will be meeting rooms for nobles, appointed and otherwise, until they require something larger in the Noble's District... Which will have floodgate controls JIC.

The rooms around the stairwell are used for storage of food, drink, and perhaps a dining room or two.

This one is from my previous fortress, Hammerbeans, which unfortunately got overrun by goblins lag. My project was to have a bedroom, dining room, food/drink storage, goods storage [Not shown, those are in the basement or attic depending on where they are], and a workshop for -every- dwarf. While it was fun, it wasn't a serious game. And everyone kept stealing each others food. :) Workshop noise was usually a moot point, since each workshop was set so only the only of the bedroom next to it could use it.

I just make 3x3 hallways and have 3x3 rooms coming off of them. Reading this has helped me though, as now I know to supply tiny rooms as well, since I've never actually gotten the economy.

I could have once, all I had to do was mint some coins... I chose not to due to the fact that I was waiting for the fortress to tank...

Wait, they still fall?  I have never, ever seen a dwarf fall, and I've got some long-ass stairway shafts.  I was certain it wasn't still in.
