This is what comes of posting without access to information. Rooms are 2X4.

Umm, my bedroom design allows for easy customizability depending on how luxurious i want my dwarves to be. It also overlaps tomb/bedroom/office/dining room.

Key:

H-wall
+-floor
8-bed
T-table
0-coffin
#-door
C-chair
S-Coffer

Code: [Select]
HHHHHHHHH
H0+8H8+0H
#+TCHCT+#
HS++H++SH

Most dwarves don't like to eat in their office, and overlapping rooms decreases room value, IIRC.

How do they feel about eating in their tomb?

I like to layout my rooms logically. No railroad apartments, reasonable floorspace. No standing on a table to get to bed. I'm experimenting with 2x3 rooms with double walls but I'm not finding it too efficient.

Personally I don't mind that much about space so much and usually stick with 3X3 bedrooms because well they feel more like rooms than holes in the wall and deactivate the economy cause it doesn't have any real advantage as it is.

What I usually do is have a large about 10X10 dining room separating my sleeping quarters and the workshops and stockpiles. Then I have a main 3 wide corridor with 4 bedrooms on each side with a door leading into the next and make that about 8 long and i need about 4 levels of these to store 200 dwarves. No noise trouble and its still fairly close to the workshops and if they just want to eat or take a break they don't have to go all the way back to sleeping quarters.

I have to admit though some of those fractal designs look pretty neat!

I have come up with a design that uses a slightly modified version of the Greek Cross Design from the Wiki.

Code: [Select]
                #####       #####
                #.#.#       #.#.#
76 Rooms        #.#.#       #.#.#      About 25 max
1x3             #.#.#       #.#.#      walk distance
            ######D###########D######
44 Doors    #...#...#...#...#...#...#
            ####D...D#######D...D####
3x3         #...#...#...#...#...#...#

    #.#.#.#.####D...D#######D...D####.#.#.#.#
    #.#.#.#.#...#...#...#...#...#...#.#.#.#.#
    #############...#########...#############
            #...#...#...#...#...#...#
            ####D...D#######D...D####
            #...#...#...#...#...#...#
            #####...#########...#####
            #...#...#...#...#...#...#
            ####D...D#######D...D####
            #...#...#...#...#...#...#
            ######D###########D######
                #.#.#       #.#.#
                #.#.#       #.#.#
                #.#.#       #.#.#

Stack two of these and you can house about 150 dorfs. :p

I figure that since dwarves almost never sleep, their bedrooms are pretty much only the place where they go to do so, and not much more.  So I use a design that is not only modular, but can be modified on the fly - including after it's dug out - to accomidate expansions.

Code: [Select]
|---|.....|---|
|BCF|.....|FCB|
|---D.....D---|
|BCF|.....|FCB|
|---|.....|---|
|BCF|.....|FCB|
|---D.....D---|
|BCF|.....|FCB|
|---|.....|---|

B = bed
C = chest
F = cabinet
D = door
. = hallway
| and - are walls

If I want to expand and give a dwarf a bigger room, I can instantly create a 3x3 room simply by knocking down one of the walls.  The above illustration can be made into four 3x3s in about ten seconds.  And the value can be raised pretty easily by engraving and by putting top-notch furniture in there.

Most dwarves don't like to eat in their office, and overlapping rooms decreases room value, IIRC.

It does decrease their value, but I look at it this way: jacking up the value of those rooms is going to require just as many statues and engravings and such no matter which way you do it, so I might as well dig out one room instead of 3 or 4.

here is mine way:

red is staircases blue is doors. you can adjust the outer doors to be farther apart or closer as needed. this design will scale for a bit but the rooms on the straight will become very big and thus i use them as noble rooms seeing as they dont care about specifics just size. this design is efficient with doors and such though can be alot of work to select.

 i generaly for the first year just dig out a layer and put beds in it. the rooms so big everythings fine and you can have it all there. this also has the benefits of making legendary miners and provides later storage space.

I mostly use a haphazard sprawl.
On the only fort where I've planned anything, I did this:
Code: [Select]
############
#+++#+#+++#+#
#+++D+D+++#+#
#+++#+#+++#+#
#####+#####+#

erk, that looks a bit messy now.

That's why I use pipes/dashes as walls and periods as floors =P

...now if I could just figure out how to make little bendy lines to use for the corners.

3x3 rooms with a table, chair, bed, coffer and closet, a up/down stair in a corner, stack as much as ye want, just have at least one floor with free access to all the stairs  ;D

Could easily be very high density compared to layouts with hallways, and should be interesting, I'll try that idea out when I can, though it sucks with economy running for the average guy

Hrm, perhaps even better: each block of four 3x3 rooms could have an up/down stair where their corners meet.

The stair will take up a square which can't be built on I don't really see how it can help save space for individual rooms. Dunno about ramps though...
