Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

I call it the donut. 26 dwarves in relative compactness but space to improve thier conditions if needs be. Granted the shape is quite rigid, but by rotating it through 90 degrees you can get 4 donuts next to each other on a single z level, so living space for a full fort of 200 (more including spouses I suppose) into a very tight spot. Spoilered for bigness.

question: why the hell do we get dorms if dwarves still get unhappy thoughts from them?

Also, I'm totally asinine about rooms once I get my fort up & running: most of them are 3*3 or more if I like the dwarf and nobles usually get palaces and the such whilst the mayor/baron/king gets a palace. I like making sprawling multilevel fortresses so this extravagent way of keeping dwarves happy fits in well.

Walls are overrated.

My last fort has 3x3 wall-less engraved rooms in a 3 stories common dormitory. Each room has 3 cabinets in the top row, bed in the center, racks and chest in the bottom. Very neat and walkable.

I agree. I like smoothing floors and walls, and using decent quality chest+cabinet+bed. Making a shared living area just looks great to me as a sort of workers' barracks or dorm. Chest and Cabinet would go into the empty spaces.

I have plenty of 1x3 rooms when I want to isolate some dorfs.

Big fucking room, with lots of fucking beds.

Those appear to be coffins, not beds. Had a tantrum spiral or two?

Okay, here's what I've been using lately:
Code: [Select]
#################
#B..#B..#..B#..B#
#..X#..X#X..#X..#
#################
#B..#B..#..B#..B#
#..X#..X#X..#X..#
#################
#..#..#<<>#..#..#
#BX#BX#>#>#XB#XB#
#..#..#><<#..#..#
#################
#..X#..X#X..#X..#
#B..#B..#..B#..B#
#################
#..X#..X#X..#X..#
#B..#B..#..B#..B#
#################
Gives me 20 2x3 bedrooms in a 17x17 space with all the stairways connecting at the top or bottom (depending where I put the residential block) and a spiral staircase down the middle. Four free tiles means room for a chest and cabinet for every dwarf!

Hello,

I think this needs to be revived... especially we now have mine carts!  Anyone got crafty minecart designs?

Where'd that user who posted that epic necro thread image go?

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

The best one I've developed puts 9 in a 'cell' in the very first level

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

F= Floor
D = Door
W = Wall
X = Stairs
You can rotate this ninety degrees. The cell shape itself is very important, mostly for the second level. You can slap a small 1x3 on the far side of the cell.

Second level:

Using the same code as before. This design is very easily rotated ninety degrees, and if done gives a nice spacious area for a statue garden or eating hall. It's very compressed and gives quite a few rooms, very easy to fit nobility in too.
