Bio:
The Shrikes of Aren were a feared elite band of centaur mercenaries, founded in the dying days of the Age of Dragons during the height of the Vargr incursions into Aren. The Shrikes' original mission was to fend off the Vargr and protect their people; many of the original Shrikes had come from tribes that were wholly decimated by Vargr raids and, to avenge their fallen families, had banded together to successfully fend off Vargr raids towards the north of the Plains with unrivalled fury. Fearsome fighters, the Shrikes were so-named for the large wings they wore on the backs of their armor as they charged into combat, intimidating the Vargr and deafening them with the clanging of the metal scales. To this day, areas where the Shrikes ambushed and slaughtered the Vargr remain marked with the skulls of their quarry, a warning to those who might come afterwards to fear the wings that sail across Aren.

The Shrikes were put to use during the war between Vang and the Liberty Union, with the Union using the Shrikes for their experience and talents, but to no avail; the numbers of the Shrikes were nowhere near enough to counter the arrival of much of the Vargr nation in response to King Balthe's promise of refuge. The Shrikes, defeated but not broken, retreated to the plains, where they have remained since the Accords were signed. Though technically not a 'tribe' in the sense that any centaur of any tribe may join the Shrikes- as long as they swear fealty to the Shrikes above all-, they are a tribe in all but name, with many members starting new families alongside their herdmates, and pride themselves in the 'tribal' tradition of martial skill, the same as any other centaur tribe might pride itself on craftsmanship. The Shrikes also maintain a fraught peace with the Vang out of convenience rather than fellowship; though the Shrikes sympathise with their hatred for the Vargr, they nonetheless were outraged and remain distrustful for their desperate use of the Vargr to defeat the Liberty Union, causing much casualties among their number.

Benvolio was born into the Shrikes, his mother a talented warrior who had fought through the worst of the last war and his father a metallurgist who, though lacking skill in combat was famed for his talent at the forge. Though he was a strong foal and took to arms like a duck to water, Benvolio was never quite at ease with fighting, nor was he ever at ease with metallurgy; he showed talent at fighting, but he was utterly hopeless when it came to metalworking. Benvolio preferred to spend much of his time learning music; Benvolio was fascinated by music, ever since a beloved family friend had taught him how to make a leaf flute, spending much of his time attempting to carve flutes and play them. He was also an oddity in desiring to understand those that the Shrikes had grown to despise, the Vargr; though many of the foals of Shrikes had grown up with the stories of Vargr as monsters who ought to be slain, Benvolio, though understandably scared of them, desired to understand why the Vargr and the Centaurs were at war.

As a result of his oddities, though a good warrior, Benvolio was all but ostracized by the Shrikes, though his own family still cared for him, if disapproving of his artistry. Eventually, the time came and King Balthe fell ill, threatening war upon the world. With the Shrikes still nominally allied with the Vang of Fort Sen, the Shrikes were obligated to send some of their own to aid the Vang. Their aforementioned distrust of the Vang over their alliance with the Vargr influencing their decision, the Shrikes decided to send Benvolio to Fort Sen as their representative. Unbeknownst to them, however, Benvolio, feeling very much isolated from the rest of the Shrikes for all of his outsider traits and facing their disapproval of him as a member of their 'tribe', saw this as an opportunity to prove his worth to his people, if not necessarily live up to their legacy, and so took the posting with enthusiasm.

Personality-wise, Benvolio is rather friendly and easy-going, an oddity among centaurs who tend towards being rather serious in nature. Though, as a result of his upbringing with the Shrikes, he is naturally distrustful of Vargr, he gets along well with other people most times, and will at least make an effort to be cordial towards any Vargr allies. He is also rather slow to anger, taking most insults in stride, a result of having to put up with the disapproval of his peers, though impugning the honor of his family, as with any other centaur, is a quick way to anger him. Benvolio prefers the artistic pursuit of music and can be found spending most of his free time practicing the grass whistle. However, Benvolio does share one thing in common with the rest of centaurkind; Benvolio is incredibly loyal and watchful over those he chooses to befriend, and woe betide the unfortunate fool who arouses Benvolio's wrath by attacking his companions.

Hey, so I read the backstory (Very well done btw) and I was thinking if I could integrate the Shrikes in my backstory as the ones who hunted down Ulf's pack when he was a cub. Are you okay with this?

Bio: Ralph Carlsen was born in a large port town in the west of Vang. As prosperous as the port was, its wealth did not affect all of its inhabitants equally. As such Ralph grew up in an orphanage ran by the local church. Under funded and over filled, the priests who ran the orphanage could barely keep their charges in check and so Ralph and the other orphans frequently got into trouble. Such behaviour continued after Ralph grew old enough to leave and strike out on his own. For several years Ralph wandered the land as a vagabond, camping in the wilderness, and begging or stealing for his daily bread. Such a life was harsh but he enjoyed living by his wits and the independence and freedom which it brought him. In time Ralph learned several other ways to supplement his meagre income, such as trapping wild game or juggling for a few pennies. Such skills did little to reform his ways, especially given his lack of concern over local poaching laws.

In time Ralph came to the town of Sen and settled down for a time. His skills as an acrobat and juggler helped draw crowds and some coins in appreciation. More importantly, they distracted passersby so that a local gang of pickpockets and cut-purses could steal from them. Naturally, when Ralph discovered that they were doing such a thing, he demanded a cut. So, when the gang was suddenly rounded up by the authorities, Ralph was incarcerated as well. Having landed in jail many times before he was not overtly concerned but continued to ply his trade and entertain his fellow prisoners with his skills. A prisoner so alert, skillful and cool under pressure quite naturally attracted the attentions of the jailers. Soon a deal was struck with him, offering to ignore his sentence in return for serving one of the local lords. Deciding that he had his fill of the vagabond life he agreed.

His faithful service to his lord would eventually draw the attention of Lady Sen herself, who needed trustworthy and intelligent retainers to assist her in her diplomatic endeavours.

Bio:
A lamia from Ator, the city of the desert. Forty years old, Laila is still, by lamian standards, a relative youth with many years ahead of her. She (along with her half-dozen clutch-siblings) was born not all that long before war broke out between the Vangian Kingdom and the Republic/Sultanate allies. Life in the desert was hard, but the war was distant and Laila's family prospered.

Tragedy struck one day shortly after the lamia became an adult. A great and terrible feral wyvern, known by many in the region as Ator's Fury due to the perfect desert camouflage provided by its scales, descended upon the el-Sylla camp in the dead of night when the snakepeople were most sluggish. Several of Laila's siblings were slain; even her skilled warrior of a father was forever crippled before the beast could be driven away.

Though diminished, the family was still fairly large by human standards and struggled to make ends meet with their primary breadwinner unable to do any useful work. The family gave up their nomadic ways and settled permanently in Ator, where many of the older lamia took whatever jobs they could, but still the young Laila went to bed hungry many a night.

While most lamia, male or female, know how to dance, Laila had won several small competitions with her skill at the art. While this was not a particularly well-paying talent in Ator, where nearly half the population was lamia, it was considered quite valuable in places where few lamia had settled; most particularly in the port city of Yenn's Landing, which had been conquered from the Vangs only a few years ago. The city was a bustling place, with hundreds coming and going every day. Though it pained her to bid farewell to her family, Laila decided to seek her fortune in the strange city. She became a tavern dancer, and sent half of her weekly pay back to Ator to support her family.

Even after the change in ownership, many Vang still lived in the city and lamented the dire straits their once-proud kingdom had fallen into as of late. Being something of an open-minded and outgoing sort, the lamia found herself sympathizing with the plight of a land not her own, and began seeking ways to be of assistance to her dispossessed neighbors. It took a great deal of time, being an outsider and non-human to boot, but eventually Laila managed to meet with some knowledgable men who told her about a certain Lady Sen...

Fighting at range one feels it might be a little too common for that PS. Change, please!

Bio: Ulf had a violent life as a Vargar. He loved to hunt the herds of centaurs when he was young, along with his pack. But soon, the centaurs started to fight back. During one of their hunts, Ulf's pack was ambushed by what seemed like centaurs, but unlike the shepards, these has decorative wings on their backs and were armed with steel. The pack was slaugthered and Ulf was mortally wounded by the centaurs while he attempted to flee the Shrikes. He limped to Arenni, where he was found by a group of Vang hunters who heard the commotion. They could have killed him on the spot since he was just a kid and unable to fight back, but instead they carried him to their home and healed his wounds. Ulf was then raised as a Vang by the inhabitants of Arenni, having to disguise his features to be accepted as one of them. Since that incident, Ulf has chosen to live as a Vang and protect Arenni as a mercenary instead of returnig to the Vargr. His wounds never fully healed, and the scars that were left remained as a grim reminder of his past as a beast and the fateful night where the winged centaurs killed his old family.
30 years ago, the Accord between Vang and Vargr finally let him drop his human disguise and join the Vang army against the Liberty Union. Killing horses was close enough for him. Almost like centaurs, really. But the scars remain and he still has pending accounts with the Shrikes mercenaries.

No HP PFs or PSs changing health restored etc, please.

Bio: Hasna was born into a poor herding family that moved around constantly searching for the next patch of meager grazing land. They sold what milk and meat they harvested, and hunted for what they could not farm. Hasna was good with a bow, but she had aspirations of scraping together enough money to travel to one of the cities and study to become a priestess. It was her best chance of escaping the harsh life outside the city walls, but as the rains became less frequent and their herd thinned due to disease and hunger she was forced to let go of her savings in order to ensure they could survive. As she came of age she settled for the next best thing: enlisting. Life was tough in the army, but she had a steady wage and knew where her next meal was coming from, so it was a step up to be sure, and her skills learned hunting served her well in the ranks.

Bio:
Lord Isold is a minor lord with land directly next to the lands of Lady Sen. He has done little of note, with the only thing that stands out of his rule was his marrying of a merchant's daughter from the Liberty Union. Although this raised many eyes, her caring and compassion for the people of Vang soon quieted all but the most stubborn of gossips. Together, they had three sons and a daughter.

The first son was raised to one day be the new Lord Isold. The second son joined the military. The third son, Makan, was encouraged by his mother to learn the art of healing. He studied under her tuitilage, since she had learned the basics when she lived among the Luce. On his 16th birthday, he was sent to Fort Sen to act as a healer there, but also to study basic fighting skills, and more importantly, start to serve as a bodyguard for the Lady Sen who had recently turned 18.

At Fort Sen, he learned more in the way of fighting and healing, helping with soldiers and others who needed his services, all the while learning more about the Lady Sen and what her expectations for him were. When she was chosen to go on a diplomatic mission, he was an obvious choice to accompany her.
