Aurora Project | Sci-Fi Strategy and P&P mix
« on: January 05, 2018, 05:27:54 am »

We write year 2210, the human race has been successful in the colonization of the solar system - yet after initial colonization civil war, epidemics and balkanization broke out on earth itself, no request for communication was answered for a period of about 100 years in which the colonies of mankind in space had to survive on their own with the basic infrastructure that had been acquired in the few generations since their founding.

It has now been about 30 years since earth had re established contact in 2184 announcing themselves under new government and rule of the Central Earth Government and Administration: CEGA. Initially seeking to reacquire a firm grasp of the former colonies, they were quick to discover that in the chaos the rest of the solar system had already founded its own nations, armies, economies and societies. The years it took CEGA to once again build its power within the solar system through a presence in space were enough for those nations to build up their own power and maintain their sovereignty for now, though the interests of earth to unite the solar system under a single ruler again are well known and without doubt.

Whether it be the great banks ruling the de facto oligarchy of Venus, Mars with its fleet of solar powered ships providing transportation and logistics for the entire solar system, Jupiter with the Jovian Confederacy or the two nations on the Moon permanently on the brink of civil war - none seem inclined to easily surrender themselves.

Conflict seems inevitable, though whether it will be resolved through means of diplomacy, war or otherwise is as unsure as the exact time that might plunge humanity towards an interstellar conflict with stakes yet unknown.

Welcome to the:

TL;DR of above spoiler:
A P&P campaign using the Silhouette Core rule system in the Jovian Chronicles setting that consists of two connected parts:
I. Players playing characters in P&P-esque missions played in sessions, ranging from diplomatic requests, to rooting out pirates attacking trade routes or gathering intelligence for rewards
II. The ‘management’ of operations that builds the base for the players, so the guys deciding what equipment to buy, which bigger contracts/missions to go for and how to keep the whole thing running.

Spoiler: How will this work? (click to show/hide)

So how do the character sheets look? How do I create a character?

As SilCore in it's own is a full P&P rulebook I'm sure someone would sue me for just publicly posting the entire character generation rules. We'll sit through that together on the Discord channel - it's quick and painless, usually done in 15 minutes or less since the system is quite simple. However, I'll hand you some images of the character sheets we will be using so you can get an idea on what skills, attributes, etc. there are.

For sake of ‘documentation’ if you’re interested in playing as either side, please fill out this QuickFormTM

FAQ:
What timezone are the P&P sessions going to be?
I live in europe. But I’m a student and my sleep cycle isn’t the most predictable thing. If we’re going by GMT+0 or Zulu time then anywhere from 20:00-06:00 is reasonable, I’m quite ready to adjust to available players on weekends or during summer break etc. I'll try to post the session times and a general overview of the mission one day in advance, and then players can sign up for it through the discord server. I might reserve slots for people if they didn't have the chance to play for quite some time or specifically asked for some kind of mission otherwise - first come first serve.

Do characters have to be fighter or mech pilots?
Since most mission are probably going to involve some kind of spacecraft thing some skills would be nice. I’m not opposed to someone riding shotgun as gunner of some larger fighter or even a character that stays exclusively on the ship as engineer/communications specialist or something of that sort, you’ll probably be more involved in the Discord side of RP than the Roll20 sessions though.
If we get like, fifteen people that all want to play marines boarding ships or private investigaros tho then we can always throw things arround.

Do I need to know the rules of the P&P System?
No! It’s fairly easy and quick to learn, at the basis it’s a D6 system that puts way more emphasis on the skills and abilities of your characters than skills. (You roll D6 dice equivalent to your skill, add your ability score. Multiple sixes add one to the total result. Example: You have an ‘Agility’ of 2 and ‘Acrobatics’ 2 and try to run after some guy to catch him, you roll 2 D6 and take highest, then add 2.) What this does it that you don’t get the usual randomness of D20 systems. If your character is an experienced marksman and he’s told to shoot a standing target under ideal conditions at 400m then it’s basically impossible for him to fail.

Do I need to know stuff about the setting?
Nope! I’ll try to give insight and explain the different factions and their motivations throughout the campaign as best I can and will always be available for questions either on the forums or through the discord server!

So where's that discord?

This looks like a very fascinating idea and I'm surprised how little attention It's gotten; I'd definitely be interested in joining the management though doubt I'll have the time to do the character/RP side at the moment.

Is...pushing a thread something legitimate in these forums? (Sorry! I don't know the rules! Hit me gently! K thx!)

Anyhow. So far we've got 3 people - only one of which I know what side he's interested in. So get me those sheets! :3
In terms of planning depending on what type of play you guys choose we might either give "management" a few turns to sort itself out or jump right in with the first session - I'd just need more information to start working on stuff.

Also: For reasons of StorytellingTM it might be easier to say there's some kind of wormhole technology that allows for travel between solar systems through static gates or giant ships that can generate such wormholes, but unless you're jumping to a beacon it's pretty much random where you end up so logistical challenges and defensive strategies still work - always looking for ideas going that direction.

EDIT: On the administrative side I've found a discord bot for rolls to use, and also started delving into the maintenance/project rules of Silhouette Core. Did I mention there's TWO 300 page PDFs that explain how shit works and what variations there are? Yeah. Also: Building prototypes is fun. The last one I rolled up had 4 different weapon systems prone to overheating.

Oh boy, I am excited for this. I've been looking to get back into P&P style games for a while.

Spoiler: Sheet (click to show/hide)
(Thread bumping is alright so long as its done within a reasonable time factor, and maybe not one right after another. I do it sometimes if no posts are done a day after an update or similar strata.)

Quick answer to your post Blood:

Mars is currently populated by a rather well functioning oligarchy that's built upon the fact that martians have mastered the use of solar sails in ships, a significant portion of interstellar trade being conducted by them. Most of the population will serve on these merchant vessels at some point in their life to earn their right to citizenship.
The entire population lives underground in colonies, though 'windows' to the outside exist that are shut when the surface turns towards the sun, most of the energy is generated through solar panels which have to be maintained from the outside, a rather...dangerous task!

Rumors exist regarding a 'terrorist' organization that opposes CEGA's rule of earth, and most South-American, African and some other states still oppose their proclaimed rule of the planet though they all have some form of agreement or participation in the main body regardless. Since the goals of this organization are completely alone and left to the GM to decide we could totally go with that idea if the vote turns that way.

As far as magical stuff goes I haven't considered any of it and would like to hold on that one unless other people show a strong interest in the theme aswell. That doesn't mean it won't be part of the campaign depending on what happens plot-wise...after all you could just as well spend like...Trillions of interstellar money on psionic research or something and while chances of the supernatural, new elements, etc. being discovered are not something that I'd class as "very likely to happen" I would hate to dictate it imposible. (I believe SilCore has magic rules though I've never used them. I'll check!)

If anything, I'd think that Mercury and Venus would be the ones that use solar sails, most notablu due to the fact that Mercury could be colonized on its poles, and the industrial structure could be centered around creating Bulk material to send to Venus for terraforming, since the SOlar Flux around venus is around twice as much as it is around earth; meaning that transportation launches from Mercury to anywhere in the solar system by starting off from Solar winds or even a large solar flair. Of course solar sails could work to transport things from mars to the rest of the solar system, but one of the original colonization plans of Venus was to use Mercury as a centerpoint where raw resources that could not be extracted from Venus's surface was sent to Venus through solar sails, since the sails could be relatively small, for the amount of material they would be sending to Venus, or possibly Earth/Mars. I would imagine that fusion powered ion-propulsion would be far more viable due to the presence of Deutrium and the like.

When I was thinking of the theoritical Covert-Ops group, I meant it more of a group of very well funded, experimental technology and ships staffed by a group of people with the skills and value to use these equipment and then... was stuck in some sort of stasis, disbanded or otherwise made a non entity for the entire period, and then promptly became a thing as an independent organization with no (little) strings attached, with all the dilipadated equipment that we had before the wars.

Of course we could declare a vendetta against CEGA, or we could commit to our own self interests and become a group of shadow-runner- like covert ops group for hire. (I prefer the second option.)

As for the "magical stuff", I meant it more as an interest then a request.  I linked some core books to Eclipse Phase in my previous post if you want some inspirations and such.

Turns out I'm a huge idiot and switched Mercury and Mars arround. Mercury is the one with the solar sails and intersteller transport houses.

Mars has been terraformed to an average surface temperature of 5°C and 0.6atm with 350 million people currently populating it, though it is split into two seperate nations, the totalitarian Martian Federation and the Martian Free Republic. They also had a space elevator. Then it got exploded in a 'political' conflict between Earth and Jupiter that nearly caused the giant interstellar war that everyone is currently afraid of. Rumor is the venusian banks are behind it all, because what isn't controlled by the venusian banks these days....

If we end up going with the Covert-Ops group then I'll definately resserve the right to give you some sort of predetermined task, affiliation or goals, simply because giving players lots of shiny toys and noone to report to would make for poor gameplay for the management side....and usually ends poorly for the campaign at large. I'm totally fine with the players having a huge impact on the solar system after they've worked up to it, but giving you the tools to mess with everything from day one seems like asking for plot derailment and doesn't leave much space for growth in terms of toys and technology.

Pre-fall Technology after decades of just sitting there not being used means it is outdated, dilapidated and most likely scavenged through, but I'd rather hear other players thoughts before we do anything. Could you send me a link to the Discord by PM?

On recommendation per PN (thanks again!) I added a whole section about the character sheet so you guys can get an idea of what's possible in terms of character creation and how all of the different systems run together.

I've also added the discord link the bottom of the post, unless it becomes a problem people will have read access to all the channels from the moment they join.

Since this has been up for a while I'll simply give it a go and say unless we get a bunch of people jumping in we'll start the management side tomorrow to get some life into this thread and actually give people a chance to contribute and do something. Depending on how interest for the P&P session side goes I'm happy to just let management run for a while until we've got enough interest to do the sessions.
