Nice Volcano Seed. Flux, Trees, Water, Soil.
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:26:48 pm »

This world generates a volcano in the center east of the map, which is in a temperate zone and covered with giant trees.  The volcano is quite tall and covered in many layers of soil, with the caveat that some of the layers (red sand when I played) carries an aquifer layer about half way up the volcano.  Its easy to pierce, I had built half a starter fort before I realized it was even there, so you have easy water access with the possibility of indoor lakes and flowing streams, right next to a magma chamber! =D The lavatube is only about 30x30 as well, so most of the map (with a 4x4 embark) is available for building.  The surface of the magma is inside the volcano (it doesn't pierce to the air far as I can tell with that lavatube bug, I even sent a guy to the top to cut trees just to be sure), so it is really easy and safe access.  The entire map has flux and I saw hematite before I even started digging, so steel is not a problem.

World map is medium, with very short history, medium civilisations, very low sites, very low savagry and minerals everywhere.  Neighbors are dwarf, human, and elf.  Unfortunately no goblins civs, is that easily changed in the world generation parameters, or what?  Wouldn't mind a little more action.

I played by putting the volcano on the lower left corner of my embark, then the game generates you on the north slope and you can dig straight in to the stone core from there without hitting the aquifier.

Thank you, I had a try for the Volcano. I raised the number of sites however and I got myself a full set of CIVs including Kobolds.

How do you increase the civilizations?  It loads with goblins now for me but thats all.

I've located two of the aquifers now.

One is, from the center of the wagon, about five squares west, five squares south, and is on two layers, three and four squares down.  You want to set up a drinking pool here ASAP, the summers can be quite warm and I had lots of dwarves/animals freaking out either the first or often the second summer.  Its conveniently close to the volcano edge so you can easily make a waterfall/river.

The second aquifer is at the very top of the map and about 40 squares to the right of the lowest visible open land on the map, there is some red sand that you channel into (but not all the red sand has water below it).

Question: Can I drain one aquifer into the other and set up natural flow, enough to power dwarf machinery?
Question: Can I get live turtles or even fish to put in a dwarf-made subteranean pond?

Thanks for sharing the seed!  I've also sent some dwarves here to explore the volcano.

There's a worldgen cookbook thread that would love to see this. :)

Thanks for posting it

Glad people like it.  Here is a map of the first aquifier level, again three floors down from the embark site. I didnt have time to explore the second level before I accidentally funned all my dwarves, but I know you can dig very close to this on the floor below it without running into damp stone, so it looks like besides an easy water supply, this volcano can quickly have a huge power station up and running with little effort.

Ok the second layer of that aquifier is slightly smaller than, and completely contained within, the confines of the top layer.  Doesn't get much better than that.

I haven't found any more higher level aquifiers spots in my various fort explorations, but I imagine they must be around on similar z levels in close proximity to the volcano edges.  None of my exploratory shafts hit any tho, and I dug a lot.

How do you bump up the civilizations/savagery?

There's a value for number of civilizations in the advanced world gen. It's near the bottom.

I don;t mess with savagery much but I believe changing the weights for it will do it.

The number of CIV was okay, but what I changed was the number of sites.

Yours was a bit low (260) compared to the number of possible CIV (40). it makes those CIV very sensitive to anything occurring during the history generation phase. With 640 I got even Kobolds.

I left it at the default for medium maps and got goblins/humans/elves/kobolds.

Also, my gen had some hematite but not much. It did, however, have OVER 150K GOLD so really now I think its ok.

Ok but I'm actually a total noob here, so what I am asking is HOW you change the parameters (what are the acceptable values and what do they do, and if the line isn't obviously named, what lines to change?)   I was going thru the modding forum but couldnt find any easy answers to this (surprised there is not a FAQ or a stickied thread for basics).

Thanks, guys.

Oh! Gotcha!

Here you go. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Advanced_world_generation

At the main screen go ahead and hit "Design New World with Advanced Parameters". Then use the wiki material above. DF wiki is the most comprehensive wiki ever created IMHO.
