We should direct the engineering drones to survey each of the red systems and see if anything can be fixed.  We should survey the damage so that we can figure out what supplies we might need.

I am also afraid life support and navigation might be infected as well, lets firewall them before we try to fix them.
+1 We should fix everything on the ship before we get into strip mining planets.

Yes!  :D. Very nice game but a bit limited. That game inspired me to finally devote some time to some concepts I had previously, but didn't do very well with due to inexperience.Rimworld is also an inspiration of the world at large, along with a couple of other games and settings.

The drones are divided and dispatched to the trouble areas. They, and you, determine that repairs are impossible. The only option is salvage and reconstruction. More efficient and cheap to cannibalize whatever remains. Meanwhile, a small amount of processing notices that your current nav-system is inefficient with your current weight--but you don't actually know that. It sets to calculate it, without much input from you. All at once you hea- no, feel- no...voices and needs and processes scream at you for attention, for processing capability. They fade as you cycle through simple data rationalization and critical thinking, focusing. The drones, acting on this impetus, set to scavenging the ruined systems, gathering the high tech components that remain.  (3+1+2+1+0=+7 high tech components)
While they work, you cycle through to cancel the alerts for the things you cannot possibly fix, i.e the database loss. You also quarantine the two functioning but non-reporting systems, running checks and scanning for any virus. No such issue, just not full programmed to be any way efficient.
You notice the measurement system is still measuring but taking a long time while you focus on other things of vital importance.

Analyze our internal atmosphere, pressure, temperature and presence of gravity

Current internal temperature is 2 degrees Celsius, filled with a non-oxidizing atmosphere of carbon dioxide and nitrogen with absolutely no moisture and held at near vacuum, something that can be changed by modifying the life support system.
Finally, all floors of your ship have approximately 1 g of gravity, varying by depth, produced and maintained by the reactor machinery at your core. The clever little measurement sub-routine provides a rough approximation of your structure, and you realize you are a spheroid with engines at one end, which you suppose would be a bottom during re-entry and landing procedures. At the other end of that is the Genebank and loom, shrouded in some ultra-strong, ultra light material that escapes the basic mass spectrometers of your engineering drones. There's a multitude of control thrusters located at various points, to assist in maneuverability and stabilizing, something the Nav system automatically calculated for the movements you input.
You adjust the system itself. You repopulate it with information from the scientific database, as well as observed minutiae from the rough orbit you're now in.  During a brief simulation, you need to make small changes to the resultant data for stability, but fare far better than without it.

A ship is fairly easy to design, as long as you don't expect it to return. The price would be 2 units of the steel, worked into a sturdy hull, and one of the high tech components . It could contain three small drones, two medium drones, 1 large drone, and 1 massive drone, if disassembled. Of course, the rest could fit more as well, but some assembly would be required.
To return...that would be more difficult. 5 units of the steel, reprocessed, tempered and modified with some of the metallurgical silicon, one wiring and control system made from a unit of the semiconductor grade silicon, and 2 of the high tech repair components for the same amount of capacity. The system would be the equivalent of remote controlled, and your rudimentary emergency transmitter systems would be interrupted by planetary conditions on occasion, but those would be easy to predict from your vantage point in orbit.

Specifically, We should aim for a mineral harvest, design to replenish our stocks in terms of initial investment while also refilling the resources that we have spent over hte eons. This means fabricating big slabs of material to be sent back up so we can further process it and use it for our own intentions and refill our inventory of spare parts among other things.

Also, send out another probe, this time Send it out to scout the outer system for more planets.

Yeah, sorry but this doesn't seem like a good system to harvest from, asteroids and small moons are good candidates but the amount of resources we would spend to pull up from a large gravity well would offset anything we made unless we had a significant industrial presence here.

We do not know if these two worlds have enough minerals to make an industrial presence even feasible.  I would much rather power down as much as possible and recharge our reserves while doing orbital scans of the planets and prepare to move on.

Do not land anything on planets right now, scan the ring system to see if it has useful minerals.

+1 we are an interstellar probe our self, I really don't think we have the capacity to make useful probes like this.

This is a red-dwarf system.  They are known to have turbulent solar winds. Their mass is low, so it is unlikely that many heavy elements are present, but the particle flow might be high enough to collect for fuel.

Consider bussard collection of stellar particles.

Various...personalities? Directories? Argue briefly before the majority(?) wins out. The discussion drains time with all the arguments and counterpoints. The data points analyzed. The majority of processing is put to designing an automated mining drone filled with a majority of the data derived from your science banks and the pattern database. It costs roughly the same as the automated dropship, just a little more (1) steel and high tech parts (1) for the drilling mainframe and tools. But as long as it doesn't enter orbit it would carry twice as much cargo.

The engineering drones are sent to retool the factories, and after a week, a new mining drone is being pushed out into the bays. It activates, running through its paces, activating each tool in turn, before shutting off and awaiting orders. Scanning through the rings around (1), you locate several useful deposits of silicates and raw iron. You dispatch the Miner, watching as the nuclear drive pushes away from your bulk towards the deposits. It should be filled to capacity with 50% iron and 50% silicates(?) within two  weeks.

You modify a set of repair drones with more shielding and a few more sensors, dipping into your high tech supplies, and put them into a 'dumb' dropship. One you drop into (1)'s gravity well and one is launched towards (2) using a dirty nuclear engine. (2)'s surface drone should arrive within a few days to a week, if the navigation system is to be trusted.

 But (1) lands within hours of deployment, stepping out on multiple legs onto the smooth grained black volcanic stone covered with dust. It scouts through its' pre-defined locations, hurrying. It continues even as the rock beneath it begins to rumble and the skies above it fill with ash and brief traces of oxygen. The dust falls to the surface in blankets as soon as it cools. The iron on the planet, at least in a wide arc from the dropship, is 'meteoric' in nature, pure, but in tiny grains disbursed over a great distance. A few sizable chunks can be found here and there, but the majority of the planet's iron is molten and within the planet's crust.

(2) lands near the north pole of the planet. The survey is conducted efficiently, even as the drone's many legs struggle to find purchase in the 'sand' of the planet. The planet is the polar opposite of (1), the iron and high quality silicates distributed evenly in the sands. A wind rips through the carbon dioxide atmosphere, a few hours into the survey, building up speed, becoming a whirling dervish of sharp stinging sands-- and you lose contact with the drone. 




The simulation database is duly investigated. There's so many variables and values that simply make no sense to you. 'Smells', 'taste', 'pain', 'pleasure'...the list goes on and on, each one simulating various scenarios of life. A clean room overlooking the current planet. A battlefield scattered with the twisted remains of machine and Terran alike. A bustling city on the horizon that vanishes in a flash of light. A warm, comfortable bedroom. A kitchen....there's dozens of them. But each has some incomplete data and incomplete information. Sometimes a 'smell' will cut out, or a graphical error will occur.

The mining drone returns to deposit five units of iron ore and five units of silicate ore, leaving as soon as it finishes unloading. The iron ore is processed with the trace amounts of carbon found within the ring, producing four units Flat carbon steel. The silicate is processed and refined, producing four units of metallurgical silicon. The factories process and adjust the waste materials, 2 units of it. The controller systems reporting plans to use the material in the next batch to increase efficiency or produce units of other useful products, including iridium, gold or other trace materials.

Okay, we need to bring our supplies up to full, work on reprogramming the navigational and life support systems while we wait for the harvesting drone to bring another batch along.

Neither planet would be good for a factory really, and we cant refuel here.  The vulcanism will have buried any useful helium and the ice is gonna be reaaaaly hard to get to with constant sand storms.

Maybe we should also look over our outer hull and try to figure out what caused damage to us, maybe we can adapt ourselves to avoid similar in the future?
