Stairs
« on: January 03, 2018, 01:50:34 am »

I am brand new to the game and have never used a forum before so I don’t know how it works usually questions I want to ask are already answered and I just search for it but anyway I am playing the walkthrough game I found on the starter pack link tab and I made it to building bedrooms and dining room but I ran out of stone I think so I tried to dig down another level and the stairs got ruined so all my dwarves are stuck underground and I tried to build replacement stairs but they were out of wood and the wood is upstairs and I can’t delete it for some reason and it’s all very frustrating

(d)ig (r)amps, that will allow your dwarves to path up. Note that a ramp needs a solid wall next to it in the direction of upward travel.

Yeah that is exactly what I wanted to avoid because I don’t know how to fix stuff once the dwarves are untrapped and if I do that the walkthrough would be useless for me

honestly???

Just start a new game.... get more familiar with what you just did, and do it faster, and more efficiently.  Then let it go, this will happen a lot!

You can dig stairs out of soil/rock, which means you don't need any building material.

And the stairs changed from up down to just down when I tried to dig below so I can’t dig through

How do you destroy stairs maybe I can make each room slightly larger and use the stone from that to make stairs

A quick fix is to designate a ramp at the edge of the room your dwarves are trapped in - that will be their way up.  On the floor above, designate a regular dig on a tile next to where the ramp will come up, and above a solid block.  This provides a platform for dwarves to use the ramp.  Then connect it to the room above if needed.  You can fill it in or wall it up later if you don't like the look.

I've accidentally trapped lots of miners, and the solution is almost always to just dig their way out and accept the cosmetic consequences of my error.

You can dig upward from below, digging out stairs as you go. You can also use 'q'uery on an unfinished construction and 'x' to delete it (so you can rebuild it with another resource, like the stone).

Definately should not need to do this. Each install of DF allows for multiple worlds to be saved (named "region nn"). You can only have one active fortress in each world, but you can "abandon" or "retire" any fort to allow you to start a new fort in that world.

Be sure to check out the wiki on stairs. The image here is excellent for understanding z-levels and digging and stairs. The search box can bring you to a lot of topics as well.

Ok I tried to delete the stair construction but it didn’t work and the reason I would have to delete my files and redownload them is because I had a presaved walkthrough world thing that I saved over while I was playing so I have to delete everything and redownload it to restart its very frustrating

It’s basically like training wheels to learn the game without having to deal with all the randomness
