We need a better cheap naval unit.

Also, tge EMU is overtaken by events. Between a fixed Rabid and Wiktor, we're good enough on that front.

Why design a big torpedo?

The enemy destroyer is unarmored. We don't need a heavy armor piercing weapon.

In fact, it'll probably be a liability more than an asset.

NAF-PG-51 "Red Herring"

The Herring  is small boat, displacing less than a hundred tonnes. Intended for rapid, high speed attacks in both shallow and ocean waters, it is lightly armored but fairly heavily armed, carrying a gun mount (suitable for an ironcaster) and 4 Wiktor machine guns. It's powered by 3 high power diesel engines, which gives it an enormous speed. A special hull shape, as well as the installation of additional rudders to the side of the main rudder, allow it to use the Lürssen effect to go faster while still being able to turn.

The Red Herring should at the very least serve as a distraction. A single gun and its small size should keep the costs at or below 4/2, and it should be relatively simple to pull off.

Normal Difficulty: 5

The NAF-PG-51 "Red Herring" is our first Patrol Gunboat.  It's small, light, and remarkably quick ship.  It's remarkably well-armed for its size, with an open-turret 2" Ironcaster emplacement on the bow just ahead of the bridge and multiple NMG emplacements.  It has four of these Wictor NMG's mounted around the hull: one above the bridge, one on each side, and one on the bow ahead and below the Ironcaster.  The large ammo supply and virtually non-existent armor is a concern, but the ship relies on its high speed and nimbleness to avoid trouble.  Two additional rudders on either side of the main rudder have the ability to deflect outward to various degrees to enable the "Lürssen effect", which pulls the ship deeper into the water and allows it to plow more solidly through larger waves.  This makes the Red Herring more functional in the Eastern Seas, but its small size means it will still struggle with accuracy on choppy water.  The large armament would normally inhibit speed, but the Red Herring possesses three diesel engines powering three screws, giving it a respectable speed.

The small size of the ship means it does not have much in the way of berthing or messing, and will rely on allied ships for supplies.  The Red Herring sits at 99 tons when fully loaded and crewed.  4 Ore, 3 Oil.

Welp. That's a 5 that may as well have been a 3. Not that it's bad- just average. Real shame about that 3rd oil, as it means it won't be Cheap this turn. Hopefully it will still be enough.

Anyway, obviously we now spend a Trivial revision to fix the Rabid (I'm gonna say "I told you so" again: I told you so)

Hah! We could have used that 5 on the Emu!
Therefore, I get to say “I told you so”, cancelling Nuke’s told-you-so.
Checkmate.

If someone makes a revision that adds a basic scope and bipod to the Rabid along with making it half-reset only, please add my vote to it.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Eh, I don't think the Emu would have been better. It's an incremental improvement to a tech we already had, which is a bad idea in Arms Races.

NAF-BC-51b "Rabid"
B variant of Rabid rifle is mechanically same as original version, except that the selector option for full reset has been removed. It is otherwise identical to Rabid. However, while we are doing this trivial change, we are also working on rail mounted optical sights to allow higher accuracy as well as optional bipod. Additional telescoping sights with 2x, 4x and 8x magnifications are also worked on.

Very Hard Difficulty: 1

Unfortunately, we fail to make any progress on advanced optics for our rifles, and users will be forced to rely on the traditional iron sights.  We do, however, put a limiting pin on the Rabid to prevent the user from switching to full-reset mode.  The change is simple enough that we can modify our existing stock of Rabid's virtually overnight, making them compliant with the Geneva Conventions.
